With a LVM you can add/remove new drives/arrays (any kind of block device
which can store data) to a volumegroup/logical volume which you then use as
backuppc pool. With a LVM it is even possible to add or remove new drives
later on. (remove of course only if you have enough space on the remaining
drives to store the data from the drive/array that you remove).
You Setup could look for example like this:
DISK 1 -\
DISK 2 -+-- RAID-5 -\
DISK 3 -/ \
-- LVM -- Filesystem -- BackupPC Pool
DISK 1 -\ /
DISK 2 -+-- RAID-5 -/
DISK 3 -/
This scheme is not complete for the LVM part (because to complicated for such
a mail). See LVM HowTo for more details on the LVM Setup.
I am using a RAID-1 on LVM Setup for a long time now and that was a clever
decission. Because the pool was full one week ago and I simply added one more
drive to the LVM and resized my filesystem (you can resize almost any fs) and
now backuppc has a lot more space to store all backups... The new drive is
not part of any raid-array, so that is only a temporary solution for me. I
will build a complete new backuppc system as soon as backuppc 2.1.0 is
available, because then I want to sell the "backup over network to
disk"-feature to customers... Without this in mind I would have added a new
raid1 to the lvm, so that the second array is fault-tolerant, too.
