Odd characters preventing backup

Post Odd characters preventing backup
I'm trying to back up Windows 2000 server via rsync. When I first set
this up, the backup ran for a week tallying up 1 full and 6
incrementals. During the backup runs, I had very odd errors like this:

Remote[1]: readlink "gdrive/c/WINNT/system32/c:/Company Shared
Folders/BJC To Be Sorted/1 Employee Handbook-Information/Employee
Handbooks?" (in cDrive) failed: No such file or directory
Remote[1]: readlink "gdrive/c/WINNT/system32/c:/Company Shared
Folders/BJC To Be Sorted/1 Employee Handbook-Information/Employee
Information?" (in cDrive) failed: No such file or directory
Remote[1]: readlink "gdrive/c/WINNT/system32/c:/Company Shared
Folders/BJC To Be Sorted/1 Employee Handbook-Information/Icon?" (in
cDrive) failed: No such file or directory

Notice the "?" character in all the file names? I looked at each file,
and they all have an odd final character that looks like a period below
the last alphabetic character of the file name. Has anyone seen this
before?

After the weeks time, I now can't get a backup to complete. The all end
with an ALRM signal. The log is huge, and I can't get it to open
properly, so I'm not sure what to try next.

Thanks,
