Post Outsourced BackupPC project - Please comment
Hello all

I have in the past installed & used BackupPC a bit. Now I am looking
to use it for one business. Since I don't have advanced skills for the
the same, I have posted a project on an outsourcing site. Link:
http://www.vworker.com/RentACoder/misc/BidRequests/ShowBidRequest.asp?lngBidRequestId=1902941#

Request please give your feedback on it. Suggestions, Critique. Maybe
something to make the project more practical & so on.

Of course, would love if someone from the list would bid.

With best regards.
Sanjay.

You state "with encrypted data", but don't define what that means. Do you
mean AES-encrypted filesystem, or are you referring to the use of OpenVPN?

Max Accepted Bid: $170.00 USD
Estimated size: $100 - $499.99

I've never seen this website before, but if that means either $170 or $500
is the maximum cost for this project, you are expecting too much for too
little. This combines expertise in multiple areas and at least some
documentation.

Tyler

I don't disagree with you that he's expecting a lot for a little, but with
outsourcing websites like that, that is exactly why they're in business:
catering to people who want a lot of work done for a little amount of
money. "Too much " and "too little" are in the eye of the beholder, of
course.

From my personal experience, projects like this with a maximum bid very
close to the minimum number on the range tend to attract people who are
more interested in getting the bid and then adding extra cost after they
are in the project, rather than somebody who is giving a reasonable number
with a reasonable expectation of completing the project.

What I mean is that the backuppc pool will reside on an AES encrypted
file system.

Would like to know if people have comments on the backup
strategy/security. Project is looking to backup about 10 machines, two
of them servers, and main reason for backup is to keep them offsite &
immune from disasters like sudden power or machine failure that is
frequent in the user environment.

Well, yes...600$ is the maximum expected bid for the
project...100-600$. Actually, on sites like this one people from
around the world are bidding & I find that difference between bids
from developed/high wage countries is two to five times higher than
bids from people in developing/low wage countries. In many cases,
people beginning at a new site or starting in outsourcing take
projects at a lower cost, to build their reputation at that site.

I have had people from Eastern Europe/CIS outbid even programmers from
my own country, India. In the end, its all market forces. India was
the cheapest in the start, now we're in the middle due to rapid wage
escalations.

Maybe I'll have to increase the bid price...let's see.

Actually, I don't think its intentional....its rather negative to
think that they do this deliberately. Many of these people are
newbies. Many take up projects outside their main domain knowledge,
hoping to learn a new domain, while they work. Many times they find
that they have underestimated the project and the outsourcing fails.
In some cases a new fee is reached, in some cases the outsourcer or
the worker cancels the project and the outsourcer has to find someone
new. Mostly this happens in the discussion stage, as an effective
requirements document is not in place.

Overall, these sites are filling a niche. I find they are narrowing
the difference further. The cost for a given project has almost
doubled in the last two years on this particular site, which I believe
is an indication that such site are narrowing the difference. Although
these do put a downwards pressure on prices in high wage countries and
an upwards pressure in low wage countries.

Whether its right or not, is of course an individual opinion.
