Post Progress?? (new to list)
Hi all, I'm new to the list and hoping to learn more about this project. Currently
I am in a testing environment and believe I have backuppc setup and running
correctly. I can initiate backups through the admin .cgi for localhost and see that
it completes. Now I'm trying to initiate a backup on a remote host. I am using
rsync and ssh. I start the backup and see that the host status is 'backup in
progress' but my question is...

How do I really now that a backup is working as intended?
Are there any log files I can watch?
The 'Speed MB/sec' field in the admin.cgi shows nothing for that host. Does this
mean it's not transferring?

I read through the faq and doc but didn't see anything that would tell me if a
backup was indeed running.

Any help is greatly appreciated...also if you need more info just let me know.
Since I'm new, I don't really know what is pertinent information yet.

Thanks again,
Jerry Norton

It won't fill in the speed until it is finished. If you are not patient
enough to wait until it finishes or times out, look in the
pc/hostname/new directory. A 'du' or 'ls -R' there will show
the files being processed.

Thanks, I am a little impatient =). It's just that I'm only backing up a /home/user
directory with only a few test files. I let the process run for about 15 minutes
and it never completes. It really should take that long for a few files so I'm
trying to troubleshoot and figure out what's going on.

In the pc/host/new directory is a single empty directory that is the mount point I'm
trying to back up, but it's empty.

I did notice that when I start the backup I keep getting "The authenticity of host
xxx can't be established. Are you sure you want to connect (yes/no)"

It sounds like my RSA keys aren't working. Would this cause the issue I'm seeing?

Thanks for the reply,

Yes, connect once by hand (starting as the backuppc user) to test it and
answer that question. It won't happen again unless you change the
server keys.

Got it working. Thanks. Re-read through the FAQ and noticed that I created the
keys on the server as root rather than the backuppc user. Thanks for your help Les!

there's a tool called 'iftop' which does a marvelous job of quickly
showing you how much bandwidth is being taken, and where it's going. I use
it to determine how my backups are faring.

that would explain it.
try su -'ing to the backuppc user, then ssh to the target machine. this will
let you answer 'yes' to the query about caching the host key, and get you by
that hurdle.

after that, I always test the backups by running (as backuppc):
/usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f hostname

(note that this is installed with the Debian package; your paths will be
different if you installed by hand).

this will usually show you what's wrong; or if it's working, you'll see the
files start to transfer.
