Ah, yes, that fixed the problem! Thanks a lot!

I wonder why it suddenly started doing that... and why it worked fine from the
command line?

Try editing the ssh command in config.pl to include the option '-x',
which should prevent the SSH error message (the xauth thing) from
getting in the way.

Perhaps the environment variables you had when BackupPC started
are different from when you ran the command-line test.

FYI, I've added -q -x to all the ssh config settings in
BackupPC-2.1.0beta[01]. But that won't help people who are
upgrading, since existing config settings are not changed.
