Actually, the way to get this to work in a (more) sane way is to modify
the $Conf{TarClientCmd} and friends to pass '-o BatchMode=yes' to ssh.

That will ensure that if exits politely, not hangs, when you are not
there to type in a password or respond to any other sort of prompt.

Er, this possibly should be in the default configuration as well. Smile

Another solution would be to create ~/.ssh/config and put this in it:

StrictHostkeyChecking no
BatchMode yes
Cipher blowfish

Something that is is also helpful is to put host specific entries in your ~/.ssh/config file,
for things like compression, hostname aliases, specific ports, etc.

For instance, I backup my fathers linux box in Canada over his slow DSL link, so I have:

Host ginger
Hostname ginger.undertow.2y.net
Port 1022
Compression yes
CompressionLevel 9

...he has a dynamic IP address, so I have a cronjob with wget that hits my web server, requesting
a bogus IP address, and a script locally that checks the error log for the specific message, then
replaces his dynamic IP in my local DNS servers's hosts file with the proper one, and aliases it to
ginger.undertow.2y.net.
