Restore backuppc files without using backuppc

Post Restore backuppc files without using backuppc
List,

I had a hard drive crash last week on my Windows machine, and thanks to
backuppc, I was able to restore with (almost) no problems. Regretfully,
the most recent backup was apparently incomplete, and some folders were
empty. So, I restored from a previous backup, and commenced spot-restoring
those few files that had changed since then. While in that process, my
Linux backuppc box also suffered a hardware failure! When it rains, it
pours! I believe that the backuppc backup files are intact, but now I only
have a Windows machine to access them. So my question is: if I move the
backuppc hard disk to my Windows box, can I access the backuppc backups
with Windows? This poses two challenges:

1. Can I read the drive's ext3 file system in Windows?

2. Can I access the backuppc backup data in Windows? (yes, I have cygwin)

Thanks in advance!

there are a couple of tools out there, which will let you browse an ext3
filesystem from Windows. I've never tried them, tho.

2. Can I access the backuppc backup data in Windows? (yes, I have cygwin)

Craig would be the person to answer this.
even if the files are uncompressed, the file metadata is stored in a special
way; so you might still need the backuppc tools to recover them.

Assuming the ext3 file system is accessible, and particularly that
the long file names and hardlinks work correctly, you can install
BackupPC under Cygwin. In fact, I use this setup for doing a lot
of my development on a WinXX laptop. Then you could either do
the restore using the apache web interface (also under cygwin),
or run BackupPC_zipCreate manually.

All-in-all, it would be much better to get your linux machine
up and running first.

I've got read-only access to my ext3 drive using ext2ifs-0.3. Seems to
work pretty well, though slow.

Are there any special instructions for installing BackupPC under Cygwin?

All-in-all, it would be much better to get your linux machine
up and running first.

Believe me: I wish that were an option.

Thanks for the help!

what about booting with Knoppix? either just using the kernel off the
Knoppix CD, and setting root=<your HDD>; or booting to knoppix commandline,
then chroot'ing to the HDD?

The machine on which I would boot Knoppix is the same machine to which I
need to restore the files. The partition is NTFS.

I am currently attempting to run CoLinux on the WinXP box and I just
apt-get installed backuppc. We shall see how it works. Looks promising so
far.

cool.

if that fails; just try restoring the files to some free space on the linux
HDD (using knoppix), then read them off the drive from Windows (using your
ext3 utility).
