Rsync Abort
Author Message
Post Rsync Abort
Recently I upgraded my server w/ the latest CVS code, perl 5.8.3 and latest
packages from CPAN.

Now in my log file, I see the following message from a very oddly mixed bag of
client machines.

2004-03-16 19:01:16 coffee: Can't locate object method "abort" via package
"File::RsyncP" at /usr/local/backuppc/lib/BackupPC/Xfer/Rsync.pm line 450.

My server has Rsync 2.6.0

The very odd part, is that I can successfully backup some hosts and not others.

Success:
WinNT 4/Win2K, Cygwin Rsync from BackupPC site 2.5.6

Failure (with above error):
Solaris 2.6, Rsync 2.5.6
Slackware 9.0, Rsync 2.5.6
Win2K, Complete Cycwin, Rsync 2.6.0

I can't seem to find any differences in the config files (each pc has it's own),
so I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting this one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

File::RsyncP is not fully compatible with BackupPC CVS. I will release
a new version of File::RsyncP that works with both BackupPC 2.0.x and
provides the new features for BackupPC CVS.

I'll email you the new File::RsyncP via separate email. I'd be happy
to do this for anyone else who wants to try BackupPC CVS, since I
expect to release BackupPC 2.1.0beta0 soon and any feedback before this
would be great. If you don't use rsync then BackupPC CVS should be ok
to try as is.

I installed the patched version of rsync last night, and it seems to have cured
all of my problems. Not sure how much mileage I get out of testing for one
day, we'll see how tonight goes.

Do you know if this patched version of File::RsyncP does anything to address the
timeout issue? Specifically, I've put very large timeouts
($Conf{ClientTimeout} = 28800) in many of my per pc configs as they would all
abort when the client timeout was reached even if more data was still coming
in.

In BackupPC CVS there have been several fixes to the timeout logic
compared to BackupPC 2.0.2. In certain cases the timeout was not
restarted during the backup, so it effectively was a timeout on the
total backup time, not the inactivity time. So you could try a
smaller (or default) value and see if the backups still succeed.

BTW, the new version of File::RsyncP is not really "patched".
It has several new features to support two key new BackupPC CVS
features: rsync checksum caching (so the block and file checksums
are not recomputed every time on the server), and the ability to
resume previously failed full backups with rsync.
