Some further googling eventually gave the solution.
Create a symlink in /usr/lib:
# ln -s /usr/lib64/BackupPC BackupPC
# service backuppc start
Now starts the BPC daemon correctly.

Hi all,
I just tried installing BackupPC on a fresh install of CentOS 5.7 x64. It
all worked fine up until I was to start the BPC daemon, at which point I got
a few lines of perl-error about Lib.pm conflicting with the installed perl.
I only used the standard CentOS-repos for updates.
Anybody seen this, and knows what might be going on?
