Some backups doesnt work again

Post Some backups doesnt work again
I have troubles with some machines and their backups. A few days ago
BackupPC_dump stop working well for these machines. Meanwhile other
hosts are working fine. The web interface returns an estrange "Tar
exited with error 512 () status".

With a BackupPC_dump -v -i machine I get this even more estranger output:

tarExtract writes the content of /net/web/web3/index.html to the
standard output. There are other files with the same behaviour but they
seem to be ok in the filesystem. Any idea how to resume the backups?

Sorry, BackupPC 2.0.2 has a minor bug with the manual -v option.
It incorrectly outputs some debug messages to stdout, which mixes
in with the tar data which confuses BackupPC_tarExtract. So
ignore the results from BackupPC_dump -v.

You should look at the XferLOG.bad.z file. What errors do you see?

Hi again! I have no luck resuming backups.

Contents of log file
/backups/backuppc/pc/epi2.grn.imente.com/XferLOG.bad, modified 2004/3/2
12:06:40 (Extracting only Errors)

Running: /usr/bin/ssh -q -n -l backup localhost /bin/tar -c -v -f - -C /
--totals --exclude=lost+found ./net ./web
Xfer PIDs are now 17655,17654
[ skipped 8468 lines ]
Bytes escritos en total: 111042560 (106MB, 1.2MB/s)
tarExtract: Done: 0 errors, 8299 filesExist, 101701315 sizeExist,
101701315 sizeExistComp, 8432 filesTotal, 104765570 sizeTotal

I tried to define a new host without no luck. Some machines work but
others don't. I can't understand. Thanks for the help.

The tar xfer method looks for the string "Total bytes written:".
See lib/BackupPC/Xfer/Tar.pm:

if ( /^Total bytes written: / ) {
$t->{xferOK} = 1;
} elsif ( /^\./ ) {
...
}

Your tar says "Bytes escritos en total:". Change that line to:

if ( /^Total bytes written: / || /^Bytes escritos en total: / ) {

or alternatively run an english version of tar.

This was the solution. Seems that Tar.pm doesn't work well with a non
english locale definition. What i can't understand is why some machines
still backup in the same machine. After all it works again. Thanks for
the help and for the software.
