Strange thing with directory ownership

Post Strange thing with directory ownership
Hi!

I was getting a lot (like 20/s) of the following errors in
/var/lib/backuppc/log/LOG:

2004/3/16 16:08:27 trashClean : Can't read
/var/lib/backuppc/trash/1079030272_22038_0/f%2f/fusr/flib/fmime: Permission
deniedCan't call method "read" on an undefined value at
/usr/share/backuppc/lib/BackupPC/Lib.pm line 417.

When I looked it up I saw that the directory had these weird owner and
group:

# ls -lad /var/lib/backuppc/trash/1079030272_22038_0/f%2f/fusr/flib/fmime/
drwxr-x--- 3 3978757097 1832845413 4096 Mar 4 18:11
/var/lib/backuppc/trash/1079030272_22038_0/f%2f/fusr/flib/fmime/

At the very moment I chowned the directory to backuppc it was deleted by
BackupPC_trashClean -process and the log-spam stopped completely. I ran a
search but couldn't find anything similar to this in /var/lib/backuppc.

I'm using debian woody and backuppc 2.0.2

As you note, the uid/gid are bogus. If BackupPC is running as
a regular user there is no way such ownership could be created.

So it looks like you have some file system corruption.

I'll fix the code to eliminate the fatal error when the directory
read fails. It's somewhat benign, since BackupPC will restart
BackupPC_trashClean.

Having suffered some minor file system corruption when one of the drives
in my RAID-5 started to play up, I feel that it would be really nice if
this sort of "unexpected but recoverable" error generated a nice, big
notice on the status screen...
