One thing I forgot to mention in my previous email to
the list: When I run 'top' on the machines that have
quit backing up I see sshd running as the top process
for about an hour after backup starts, then it drops
off, suggesting the server has quit running the tar
command. However, the log entry (cleaning up after
signal ALRM) occurs four to seven hours after the
backup begins. It seems that it waits for an awfully
long time before the server quits trying to backup the
client. Does that offer any clue?
