Post Upgrade on Ubuntu
Hello everyone!

I've inherited a BackupPC installation which hadn't made any backups for 504.3 days (gulp!) but have managed to set that right (I think).

It is on an Ubuntu 8.04 server and now running BackupPC 3.0.0. As the wiki is very clear about not mixing package and "by hand" upgrades, I was wondering if there is a way to determine if my installation has been performed using apt-get or by hand?

Nice! That the reason why the former admin was made to leave it to you?

Use aptitude (or synaptic if you prefer gui) and see whether backuppc was
installed by package management.

And then update that 8.04 to 10.04 to get new features, more security fixes and
less trouble when 12.04 arrives...

Have fun,

Arnold

Honestly, once you get the current thing functional, get another
machine and clean-install everything yourself with the latest and
greatest LTS. When that new install is up, running, and verified to
restore everything you want the right way you can take the old one
offline (keep it's archives as long as you need though).

If backup PC was this messed up, do you trust the rest of the machine?
I wouldn't.

A.

You also have the luxury of not worrying about migrating the past data over Cool

Make sure with your new setup you give Topdir its own dedicated
filesystem, in such a way that it's easy to expand without taking the
system offline for long periods, and ideally also easy to switch from
one host to another. If you don't have a SAN in-house I recommend LVM
over RAID6 but of course YMMV.
