Xtreme Client Crash

Post Xtreme Client Crash
Hi, I have had a small technical problem.

I was doing a backup of a client <hostname> and I did its first full backup.
Things went well, no problem nowhere untill we got suddenly the following
error on the client machine. (remark we started the full bacup on the client
using te cgi-interface, graphical interface and the error came on tty-1.

The error was the following
<begin error>
Error reading block <BLOCKNUMBER> (attempt to read block from filesystem
resulted in short read) while doing inode scan.
<end error>

The backup was done using rsync over an ssh tunnel trought backuppc (a user
on the client machine) (We do not use the root stuff for safty reasons). So
it is done according to the FAQ "How can SSH be configured to be more
secure?" but without the "nice -n 19" in the rsync command.
I was using BackupPC.2.1.0beta2.
I have done the same with an other PC that didn't crash. A third pc crashed
emediately but without damage (CPU and memory raised extremely high and
everything shutted down)
The PC where the crash has happened has a total fucked up harddisk now and
fsck didn't do the trick to fix it.
Luckally the backup was allemost finished.

Is it possible that this crash is comming from backupPC or is it something
else?

Thanks

Klaas

That sounds very much like a hardware error, probably reading a
little-used part of the hard drive. The kernel should have logged
a more detailed version in /var/log/messages or it might show it
with 'dmesg'. If you want to be sure that the error is at the
hardware level instead of the filesystem, try something like
'cat /dev/hda >/dev/null' that will force a read on every
disk sector. If you have errors or hear the disk drive doing
a lot of seeks to recalibrate you should replace the drive.
