Attachments: Message as HTML

Mr Robert,=0AI don't want to waste your time, nor the other's ! I just aske=
d for a simple configuration for my HP StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium 232 Tape Au=
toloader If it's a waste of time for you and the list I will understand and=
stop harassing you with my stupid newbie questions !=0A=0AI want just to s=
ay that I read the docs but I did not find something realy Windows/Tape Aut=
oloader oriented (note: the config here is the one given in the installed f=
iles)=0A=0AI really apologize for the time I'm making you wasting ! I've ge=
t a wrong start and now no one wants to help me ! I believed that this list=
is for helping people new to bacula like me and who did not understand ver=
y well the documentation, but I think I was too much wrong.=0A=0AI think it=
's just cased by the fact that I don't use my professional email in the lis=
t ?! =0AAnyway, is there any one who can give me a simple storage definitio=
n for an HP StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium 232 Tape Autoloader ? I will be very g=

e to the conversation about using HP Windows=0A=0ADrivers. =0A=0A=0A=0AIn =
my conversations with HP and other vendors about drivers and tape=0A=0Adriv=
es on Windows, the consensus seemed to be that using Windows drivers=0A=0Ac=
reated more problems that they solved. Their advice was to address=0Athe=
=0A=0Ascsi devices directly. The benefits are increased throughput and=0Af=
ewer=0A=0Aproblems communicating with the devices. =0A=0A=0A=0AI do not ha=
ve experience running the Bacula sd on Windows, but I have=0A=0Arun other e=
nterprise backup systems on Windows and this was the advice I=0A=0Awas give=
n by the vendors. IIRC, the issue is with scsi device=0Acommand=0A=0Acommu=
nication, and the applications handled it better directly with the=0A=0Adev=
ices than through the Windows drivers. =0A=0A=0A=0AThe earlier advice abou=

this is an excerpt from user manual (Configuring the Director, The FileSet
resource):

*Media Type = <MediaType>* This directive specifies the Media Type to be
used to store the data. This is an arbitrary string of characters up to 127
maximum that you define. It can be anything you want. However, it is best to
make it descriptive of the storage media (e.g. File, DAT, "HP DLT8000", 8mm,
...). In addition, it is essential that you make the *Media
Type*specification unique for each storage media type.
<<

... with the recommendation:

The *MediaType* specified here, *must* correspond to the * Media
Type*specified in the
*Device* resource of the *Storage daemon* configuration file.
<<

This should be enough to answer your question, or go back to documentation.
Apologies to those of you who read this as pure ASCII mail and get ugly
formatting.

That is not how mailing lists work. A mailing list is for people who are
willing to read the documentation, and then either ask a question to
clarify it or for some help with something they've tried and does not
work properly. It is NOT "I bought hardware X, please provide me with a
storage definition." That is called a support contract and costs good money.

Post Bacula Config For Autochanger
Hello,

There are a number of elements here that I hope everyone takes into=20
consideration properly:

1. Until Win32 Dir and SD are documented in the manual, I do not consider t=
hem=20
supported (this wasn't as clear as it should have been in the ReleaseNotes)=
=2E =20
That said, it *is* released, it *does* work, and it *will* be fully=20
supported, hopefully in the near future.
2. Not having the Win32 Dir/SD documented in the manual clearly implies mor=
e=20
than the usual number of support problems.
3. Nawfel may not be native English speaking judging from his email address=
--=20
this adds one extra level of complexity. Eventhough I am fluent in French,=
=20
and the part of the French manual that is translated is *really* excellent,=
I=20
would have difficulties understanding it because my "technical" language is=
=20
English.
4. Nawfel, if you are not using your normal professional email address, I=20
consider that a mistake (not totally correct/honest), but something that=20
unfortunately seems to be prevelant with some corporations.

Regards,

Kern

Hi Robert,
=20
=20
=20
This comment is in reference to the conversation about using HP Windows
=20
Drivers. =20
=20
=20
=20
In my conversations with HP and other vendors about drivers and tape
=20
drives on Windows, the consensus seemed to be that using Windows drivers
=20
created more problems that they solved. Their advice was to address
the
=20
scsi devices directly. The benefits are increased throughput and
fewer
=20
problems communicating with the devices. =20
=20
=20
=20
I do not have experience running the Bacula sd on Windows, but I have
=20
run other enterprise backup systems on Windows and this was the advice I
=20
was given by the vendors. IIRC, the issue is with scsi device
command
=20
communication, and the applications handled it better directly with the
=20
devices than through the Windows drivers. =20
=20
=20
=20
The earlier advice about determining the device id's using scsilist.exe
=20
would facilitate this, I think. =20
=20
=20
=20
FWIW.

First of all start with the configuration files installed by the
=20
installer. They have examples that you should be able to use by
just
=20
uncommenting the proper definitions and changing a few
entries. I
=20
don=92t know now you created these configurations but they are all
=20
messed up. You have entries from the Autochanger resource in
your
=20
Device resource and you are missing the Autochanger resource. =20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
You need to pay particular attention to how the various resource
=20
structures from the configuration files reference each
other. For
=20
example the Device in the Storage resource in the Director
=20
configuration file must match the Name in the Device resource in the
=20
Storage configuration file. In your case it should be
HP_Ultrium not
=20
the physical address. Device Names such as changer0, tape0 and
=20
4:0:5:1 are only specified in the Storage configuration.
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
Spend some time looking at the example configs and read the
=20
documentation and you=92ll probably have much better luck.

Which part of this information from the Readme.txt file did you not
=20
understand?

Storage Device Names

--------------------
=20
=20
=20
There is a utility installed called scsilist.exe which displays the
=20
installed=20
=20
=20
=20
devices, their physical address and their device name. A link
to it
=20
is=20
=20
=20

created in the Bacula menu when the Storage service is installed.

=20
=20
Changer and Tape device names in Windows are Changer0, Changer1, etc
=20
and=20
=20
=20
=20
Tape0, Tape1, etc. If there isn't a device driver loaded for
the
=20
Changer=20
=20
=20
=20
then you need to use the address <Port>:<Bus>:<Target>:<Lun>. Port
is

the=20
=20
=20
=20
SCSI Adapter Number, Bus is the Bus Number on the adapter (usually 0
=20
since=20
=20
=20
=20
most adapters only have one bus), Target is the device's Target Device
=20
ID,=20
=20
=20
=20
Lun is the Logical Unit Number.
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
You must specify DeviceType =3D tape in the Device resource in bacula-
=20
sd.conf=20
=20
=20
=20
since auto detection of device type doesn't work at the present time.

The problem is : under windows I have no idea about how the system
