Exchange 2010 plugin backup failure
Author Message
Post Exchange 2010 plugin backup failure
Hi there,

I have a client that has recently purchased Exchange 2010 Standard. I
am trying to get it to backup using the plugin included in Bacula
(5.0.1), but apparently this plugin will no longer work with Exchange
2010 and neither is it even recommended for use in Exchange 2007
(although I know it to work correctly with the latter). Here is a link
with some information:

http://blogs.msdn.com/rickhall/archive/2010/02/02/legacy-backup-api-failing-on-hresebackupreadfile-with-hr-0xc7ff1004.aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877010.aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa580485%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx

The error received in Bacula is as follows:

08-Mar 23:29 client-fd JobId 2326: Preparing Exchange Backup for
EXCHANGESERVERNAME
08-Mar 23:29 client-fd JobId 2326: Fatal error: HrESEBackupPrepare
failed with error 0xc7ff1007 - Unknown error.

I'm wondering if anyone else has a way to work around this? I know
that I could simply have a client run before job to initiate a Windows
backup of the Exchange database...but I don't like that option for a
few reasons, mainly since it forces us to have enough space to dump
the data onto so it can be sucked in by Bacula. VSS backup I think is
still an option, but I'm not sure about this yet...

Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Angus Jordan

Any messages in the event log? c7ff1007 isn't in the header files for

Post Exchange 2010 plugin backup failure
Hi James,

Can you try making the registry changes documented in this link

http://forum.ultrabac.com/showthread.php?p=607
or
http://www.asigraforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3347

I will give these a try tonight, but I'm fairly certain that these
only apply to Exchange 2007.

This client is running Exchange 2010 and, according to the Microsoft
links I put in my original post, Microsoft has removed this "legacy"
backup functionality from their 2010 product and replaced it with a
supposedly "more robust" backup system.

In any case, I will try the registry changes and let you know what
happens later this evening.

Best Regards,
Angus Jordan

Hi, I m also interested since I recently migrated to Exchange 2010 , and was looking to move my bacula schedule to the new server thought from :
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877010.aspx

Backup and Restore Technologies and Features Removed from Exchange 2010

The following Exchange 2007 technologies and features are no longer available or supported in Exchange 2010:
  • Streaming database backup and restore.
  • Storage Groups. Each Exchange store database is managed separately in Exchange 2010.
  • The Exchange Recovery Storage Group. This has been replaced by the Exchange Recovery database.
  • Single-Copy Clusters (SCC).
  • Local Continuous Replication (LCR).
Really lots of change to take care of that was removed even from Exchange 2007 I dubt that a registry hack will do it

Hi James

For what it's worth, I've tried all of the registry changes noted in
the above links. None of them make any change to the issue
what-so-ever. As the links I posted say, the "legacy" backup api has
been removed from Exchange 2010 permanently.

It's back to VSS backups for now, at least we have those...although
I'm not all that confident in the ability to restore the data. But I'm
doing a snap of the entire Xen image for now and shoving that out onto
tape as well, just to be sure. Smile

I look forward to any developments, I'd be happy to setup a test/dev
environment if that would help get a proper plugin for Exchange 2010
and Bacula. Send me an email privately if you're interested.

Best Regards,
Angus Jordan
