Oracle Database Backup Question

I have checked out the FAQs and the documentation, but perhaps I missed
something or haven't looked closely enough. I was wondering if it is
currently possible for Bacula to backup an Oracle database. This is a
production database and I am running Bacula 1.38.11. From what I have
found, it seems my only choice is to use Oracle's tools to grab a
snapshot and back that up. Are there any other options that I may be
missing? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Ian,
you are correct. Bacula does not have a specific
backup agent for Oracle, and the only way to back up
an Oracle database is the good old BEGIN BACKUP/END
BACKUP procedure.
I wrote a piece about the way I run such a backup at
my workplace. You can read it in

http://paramount.ind.wpi.edu/wiki/doku.php?do=show&id=application_specific_backups#oracle_10g_release_2
I run hot backups every day and delete archived redo
logs, rock solid. Did several successful restores.
Last time I looked, my server uptime was 32 days.
I know, commercial products offer great backup agents
for Oracle, but as a free solution, Bacula works
GREAT. Regards,

Georger

Hi Georger,

I've been trying to setup the backup of our Oracle server with bacula following the steps mentioned in your doc. But, I am getting these errors:

25-Jun 08:55 tapti18522-fd JobId 20: ClientRunBeforeJob: SP2-0734: unknown command beginning "/var/oracl..." - rest of line ignored.

I guess it has to do with the fact that pl/sql does not recognize 'host' command:

Would like to know how it worked for you, and/or if there any additional steps that I need to follow.

Greatly appreciate your response.

Thanks,
