Restore Data from Virtual Tapes Only

Post Restore Data from Virtual Tapes Only
I've been using the virtual tape feature for a while, but we started to
run low on disk space, so I carved up a new partition on the SAN and
used the opportunity to upgrade the machine to RHEL5. I kept my old
virtual tape partition and backed up all my bacula files in case
anything happened while I was in the process of upgrading.

Now that I've got the new system up and running, someone has asked for a
file that apparently exists only on that old virtual tape drive. Even if
I wanted to dump my new production install, I've discovered that I made
some kind of mistake during my bacula backup and don't have the original
config files. So, what I'm wondering is if there is a way to import and
restore from a batch of virtual tape files. I believe I've read that
this is possible with real tape, though it may take a long time. Can
someone give me a hint on how I might do this? I don't suppose those
files are in a format that I could just dump with tar or cpio? That
would be the easiest solution, it seems.

Thanks!
DC

By you saying you backed up your bacula files, are you implying you backed
up your config files and not the catalog or vice versa? If you have the
original catalog backed up with these files from your original backups, that
should be used for restoring your files. A little clarification would help
solve the problem.

Using bscan, you should be able to import the ld volume files into the
curently running catalog.

For ease of use, you could simply add another storage device, pointing
tot he old volumes, to the new SD for the actual restores.

Not tar or cpio, but rather Bacula :-)

You can access the files with bls and bextract, but unless you know
which volumes to work on, first bscan'ing them and then using them
through the Bacula installation would be the better choice.

I attempted to back up the configs and catalogs, but those files don't
seem to be readable now. Is there any way to simply dump the contents
of the disk archives (virtual tape files, or whatever they're
technically called)? I have plenty of disk space available, so even if
I have to just extract the entire archive to get a single file here and
there, that's doable.

Thanks
