It seems like it would be better to not have a Recycle flag set for my
file based pools is that correct?

I was trying to get a bit of a better grasp of Volume Retention and
recycling.
For Tapes I understand that after the Job, File and Retention Period
the Tape Volume is Marked as Recycled and can be reused again.
For Filed. What happenes after Job, File and Retention period
expire? Does the file get Deleted or Truncated if the Purge Action
is set to Truncate?
Also how can I figure out exactly how long a Volume will be saved.
For example I want to save my Tape Volumes for a year, My
Differentials for 6 months and my Incremental backups for 3 months.
I've tried setting the Retention time on those Pools for the correct
time but they don't seem to get truncated or deleted after the
retention period.
Basically, File and Job Retention operate only on the Catalog to
reduce the amount of information stored about the past jobs. Volume
Retention indicates when the volume MAY be recycled, provided
recycling is enabled for it. The volume status is still shown as
"full" or "used" and nothing won't happen to the actual tape before
the volume is really needed for another use (or you put it into a
shredder), the volume is still kept usable as long as possible. So,
though a tape volume had a 3 mo retention, nothing is guaranteed to
happen the day this time expires, but only after the recycling
algorithm notices it really needs to re-use that spesific tape. And
if you change the retention periods of the pool after originally
labeling the volumes, make sure you have "updated" the retention
periods to the existing volumes too (you may use llist [=long list]
command to examine the retention periods that are valid to your
existing volumes)
Truncate option for file volumes should also affect to the actual
file volume when the period expires. I haven't used it (since I use
tapes), it probably works nowadays but I think it had a dangerous bug
in the distant past.
