Backup of NAS via NFS mount - 2 subclients. 1 works, 1 doesn
Author Message
Post Backup of NAS via NFS mount - 2 subclients. 1 works, 1 doesn
I'm backing up an NFS mount on a Solaris box which points to a Sun Storage 7000. Data size ~20TB. I did this as it was cheaper to use the Solaris license, over buying a very expensive NDMP license. Originally, I had a single subclient configured and used synthetic backups, and this all worked fine. However the data set is growing quite large now, and i need to reconfigure this backup to bring the backup window back down.

As a first test i split the job into 2 subclients. Subclient #1 backs up folders a,b,c on the NFS mount. Subclient #2 backs up folders d,e,f on the NFS mount. They are both configured identically apart from that.

Subclient #1 runs fine, and backs up its contents (several TB's) correctly. However Subclient #2 runs and completes but doesn't actually back up, and then says it completed without errors. I say it doesn't backup anything, it does backup the top level folders and then finishes. It doesn't seem to do a scan of the filesystem for some reason, and hence doesn't back up the contents of the folders. This failing subclient has been configured to backup 3 paths which are /x/folderD, /x/folderE, /x/folderF.

Any idea what i'm doing wrong, or what to look for?

Any ideas on what method(s) i should be looking at to backup this NAS? Do i need to bite the bullet and go for another NDMP license, or are there any other ingenious cost effective ways i can backup this up?

TIA

Mark

Post Backup of NAS via NFS mount - 2 subclients. 1 works, 1 doesn
Try setting the targets of Subclient #2 to be one level lower. I have had that problem in the past where I needed to specify the subdirectories.

Also, I know NDMP is a major pain because of the steep cost of the commvault license, but you might want to see if backing the data up through the Solaris NFS mount is preserving the files' meta data (permissions, ACL's). One of the dangers of backing up NAS data through another server is that the NAS is the one that knows the file permissions. I'm not sure if the iDataAgent on the server is getting that.

Thanks for the advice on the metadata. I'll check that.

I'm not sure drilling down one more level, will be realistic as there are too many folders under each of the 3 directory paths i have specified, and new folders are added at random.

What's odd is that subclient #1 is configured the same way, but doesn't have this problem?

Maybe i'll sift through the logs and raise a ticket.

Just thought i'd post here first to see if anyone had seen anything similar.

Cheers

Mark
