Backup Strategy for 8-10tb of data?

Post Backup Strategy for 8-10tb of data?
Last nights synthetic full of around 700gb of VM's took approx 17 hours, so scaled up to 8tb...

You really need to look at DASH fulls - a V9 feature. A DASH full is an option for a synthetic full. It's enabled on the storage policy primary copy. Instead of moving all that data, it only adjusts pointers for data already in the disk library. The data blocks don't move at all! Once you've enabled DASH fulls on the SP copy, subsequent running of synthetic fulls run in DASH copy mode. Note that DASH fulls to tape are not supported.

BTW, "DASH" = Deduplication Accelerated by Streaming Hash.

DASH copies - also a V9 feature - are enabled on storage policy copies, but only on secondary copies (ie. synchronous or selective). They do not apply to the primary copy. They are only supported for disk. DASH copies are an option for aux copies. When a secondary copy has DASH copy enabled, then aux copies run in DASH copy mode. Only new and changed data blocks are copied to the destination. Without DASH mode enabled, an aux copy job has to copy all data blocks ("rehydrate" the data) to the destination, who then determines what data to keep or discard via its own deduplication database.

If you are running V9, please do these things:

1. Enable DASH fulls for all storage policy primary copies (disk only). Any subsequent synthetic fulls will run in DASH full mode. You should also change from full backups to synthetic full backups wherever possible. And if you're not using deduplication, start using it!

2. Enable DASH copies for all storage policy secondary copies (disk only). Any subsequent aux copies will run in DASH mode. Make sure you're using deduplication in these copies.

3. Apply service pack 1A (yes 1A) immediately. Service pack 1 has been out for a little while but it created its own problems. SP 1A contains SP1, ML11, and other patches. It was released in the last day or two.

4. Compare the backup times of your synthetic fulls and your aux copy times. Once in DASH mode, you'll see a big difference!

Craig McGill.
