Backup to Disk then to Tape
Good Day All.
How do I setup a job to backup to Disk and hours later execute the same job now to Tape.
Since I modify the Default subclient to use a Tape Library how do I tell it to use a Magnetic Library later?
Thanks a lot.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
You can do that at the storage policy. You can add a sychronous copy to another library. Make the disk the primary copy and tape the synchronous auxiliary copy. You could also set up inline copy where both copies are made while backing up the server. Using the aux copy method is less resource intensive

Backup to Disk then to Tape
But those would be copies, let me explain:
I want to run Daily Differential jobs and a Weekly Full to Disk then I would like to run a Weekly Full and a Monthly Full to Tape.
So maybe a copy won't work here, right?
Thanks for the reply.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
Look for split storage policy in documentation where you can specify full storage policy and other jobs go to a different storage policy.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
You can do that. Create another copy and check the Selective copy box. It only copies fulls. By default it will automatically copy. Or you can set to manually select your copy jobs

Backup to Disk then to Tape
you may create a second backupset and then you can use another Storage Policy for the subclients in that backupset.
You can setup the subclients in those backupsets so that they have the same content
Kind Regards

Backup to Disk then to Tape
Ng, I think you need to be a little clearer what you’re wanting to do.
If you have your server, do you want to backup to disk and then copy from the disk backups to tape?
Or, do you want to be able to backup your server to disk on week 1, 2 and 3, and week 4 backup directly from the server to tape?

Backup to Disk then to Tape
I agree with the previous answer of a new backupset along with the Selective backup I mentioned.
Here's the deal:
If the ONLY thing you're ever going to put to tape are full backups, a 2nd copy done as a Selective and set to the weekly fulls (or manually chosen) will work.
If at some point you think you may want to do a Differential or Incremental backup to tape, creating another backupset is the way to go.
Looking at both, the second backupset is the least complicated as far as merging into your backup environment, but it means pulling more data from the system being backed up, as opposed to your media agent.
Here's how it will look:
You're doing 2 different actions here.
1) Monday-Friday Differential
2) Saturday (just as an example) is a full.
If you do this as a selective backup (and you set the retention to have extended retention for the Monthly full... I assume you wanted the monthly to have longer retention), Once the full backup is done on Saturday to disk, the backup to tape will be made from the data already on your media agent. You're not using up the resources of the server being backed up (or its network).
If you do this as a second Backupset, it will look like this:
1) Monday-Friday Differential (to disk)
2) Saturday Full Backup (to disk)
3) Second Saturday Full Backup (to tape).
The selective was doing #3 from your media agent's disk, the second Backupset is pulling it from the server.
Both will give you what you need to get the job done, but Selective backup copies can only be full backups. If you wanted to copy an incremental or differential to tape, that copy wouldn't work. You'd have to do it as a Synchronous Aux Copy.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Now If I have 8 Linux file servers that I want to backup the same way, how do I backup them all, using a Schedule, right?
Here's where I have another confusion
On that Schedule I have 2 Tasks, 1 is for Fulls every Saturday 11:00 PM and Task 2 Differential Mon-Fri 11:00 PM.
On selections I should add these 8 Linux servers but where do I tell it to use Disk for the Daily ones and Tape for the Weekly fulls. This is Kind of confusing...
Thank you all for your helpˇ

The choice of sending to disk or tape is in your Storage Policy.
So, in the 2 scenarios below, it would look like this:
Selective Copy:
Your Storage Policy would have its Primary copy be your disk, you'd create a Second copy. Mark it as Selective and send that to tape.
When you do your backups, they will all go to disk, and the Selective Copy will be used to make a copy of the full backups to your tape.
Using a 2nd Backup Set:
You would create 2 storage policies. Your default backup set will use one storage policy that has its primary copy on disk. Your second backup set would have another storage policy that has its primary copy on tape.
As for schedules, you can give each subclient its own schedule, or you could go into policies and create a Schedule Policy which will make them all start at the same time, but since you're mixing Differentials and Fulls on 2 different media, the simplest way to go is to just set up a schedule for each subclient you're backing up. Using a schedule policy for all of them would work if you chose the Selective Backup from the 2 choices, but since you're new to this environment, I'd suggest creating individual schedules for now and then planning out a schedule policy once you've done some testing and understand how it will work

Backup to Disk then to Tape
I will try your suggestion later in the day since you say it is less intensive on the clients.
How about Incremental storage policy? I mean I already have a storage policy and Weekly Fulls going to tape, now I just edit it and create an Incremental Storage Policy to Disk, is this correct?
On a test I created a Storage Policy to MagLib1, added it the incremental storage policy to MagLib2.
Then created a Schedule policy, Fulls going to MagLib1, Diffs going to MagLib2, added 2 win file servers and it seemed to work, would it be a valid solution for what I'm trying to do here?
One thing though, I ran the schedule twice and the second time the Full ran it said the data will be retained for a year? when the previous job said It will be retained for 30 days, Why the retention time increased the second time the job ran.
Thanks for your help.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
I use incremental storage policies for 1 reason. My incremental backups have a different retention than my full backups (because I use the extended retention rules for monthly backups). If you put your incremental and full backups on the same storage policy, they go on the same tapes. If they have different retention times, the incrementals age off and you have tapes that are 50% capacity or less.
If your differentials and full backups are the same retention, you can keep the same storage policy. If they have different retention rules, use the incremental storage policy.
With your test, if the storage policy to maglib 1 always perform full backups and you want every full backup to make a copy to tape, then the 2nd copy doesn't have to be a selective copy. You can just do a Synchronous Auxiliary Copy and it will auto-copy every job from that storage policy to the 2nd destination (tape drive).
I suggested Selective copy before because that is what you would use if you have both Full and Differential using the same storage policy and only wanted to copy full backups (Synchronous Auxiliary Copy does every job in the storage policy, selective only does full backups)
As far as the retention on your schedule, the retention is set in the storage policy. Is it possible the second full backup is using the Extended Retention rules in the storage policy? The retention shouldn't change between backups unless it meets the criteria of the Extended rules.

Backup to Disk then to Tape
Can anyone tell me how to get the commsrv daily backup tape to eject automatically, I have it set up to run four times a day and at 10am after that backup it will use a different tape but the tape that it had used the previous time will not kick out unless we manually export it.
Thanks

Subject: Re: [commvault] Backup to Disk then to Tape

Ng, I think you need to be a little clearer what you're wanting to do.
If you have your server, do you want to backup to disk and then copy from the disk backups to tape?
Or, do you want to be able to backup your server to disk on week 1, 2 and 3, and week 4 backup directly from the server to tape?

But those would be copies, let me explain:
I want to run Daily Differential jobs and a Weekly Full to Disk then I would like to run a Weekly Full and a Monthly Full to Tape.
So maybe a copy won't work here, right?
Thanks for the reply.

Good Day All.
How do I setup a job to backup to Disk and hours later execute the same job now to Tape.
Since I modify the Default subclient to use a Tape Library how do I tell it to use a Magnetic Library later?
Thanks a lot.
