Post Barcode Labels, Check Digits etc
Tape library configuration holds the option as to what is returned by the barcode reader, sounds like it's just returning LTO instead of the full Six Plus (L4)...

Don't know what library you have so can only recommend to look around and try setting the media label / barcode reader to Six Plus so it will return both the barcode and media type (A00001L4). (Six by itself means barcodes show up as A00001, etc.)

Dear all,

I've just ordered some new barcode labels, specifying they were for LTO4, and that check digits were required.

My existing tapes are read by the library as A00001L4, A00002L4 etc.

However although the new labels are visibly marked as A00003L4, A00004L4, they are read by the library as A00003L, A00004L etc (ie there is no '4' at the end).

Am i correct this this means there is no check digit on these labels? If not, what does this mean?

The only references i can find on the web are that LTO2 should have an L2 suffix, LTO3 should have an L3 suffix, and LTO4 should have an L4 suffix etc, but i can't find any reference to what 'L' on its own signifies.

TIA for any thoughts.

Mark

Post Barcode Labels, Check Digits etc
Hi Luke,

Thanks for the reply. Its a Qualstar XLS library.

I'll have a look for that setting, however i'm fairly certain that's not the cause here, as i am getting 7 characters read (A00003L, A00004L etc) not 6. This would suggest the reader is already reading the full barcode, but the barcode itself is missing the '4' hence why it isn't reading it.

Also, my previous barcodes are still being read by the same library with the correct L4 suffix. If it were an incorrect configuration on the reader, ALL of the barcodes would be affected, not just the new ones.

Hence this looks like an issue with the new labels, I just need to be sure what the issue might be so i can report it back?

Cheers

Mark

It does seem to be an issue with the labels. Does anyone know if an 'L suffix instead of the expected 'L4' suffix does indicate the absence of a check digit?

Is there any easy way to tell if a barcode actually has a check digit or not?

Cheers

Sounds very much like bad labels. Only element changed was the labels and everything else worked in the past.

Ahh I took a stab in the dark just in case there was an obscure mode out there that only returned 7 chars Smile

Wouldn't have a clue what it might be then, maybe the printer fouled up the barcodes at the factory.

If you've got working tapes in your library compared to these, then maybe send them a screenshot of the inventory from the qualstar gui/admin webpage so they understand it's not your reader.
