Hi Paul,
"Is anyone using the vsphere host based agent (the new one I believe not the old proxy agent)?"
Just to be clear when you say old are you talking about VCB(
http://www.vmware.com/products/vi/consolidated_backup.html) and new is VADP (
http://www.vmware.com/products/vstorage-apis-for-data-protection/)? Or is there an agent that acutally runs on ESX that I'm not aware of?
We were using VCB(old) with commvault 8 when we first installed just over a year ago. We found it to be buggy, inconsistent, and require constant maintenance.
About 4 months ago we switched to VADP after upgrading our ESX hosts to virtual hardware 7 (a requirement I think). Once we got all our guests to this point VADP has been stable, quick, and easy to maintain. In commvault 8 it's a bit of a trick to setup requiring a registry edit, but once you get it running it's solid. I've been told that Commvault 9 makes it significantly easier to setup.
Cheers,
Taylor

I ask as right now we use a different product to backup our vSphere
hosts because of pricing/licensing and it would be nice to be able to
pull those backups into the Commvault product as well.
From where I'm sitting it seems it shouldn't be difficult to stick a 2U
Windows 2008 R2 box at the other end of our site stuffed full of 2tb MDL
SAS drives, connect an LTO library and have a self-contained D2D target
with dedupe which could spool aux copies to the attached LTO?

Subject: RE: [commvault] Capacity Based Licensing
We're considering it as well because we have to make a $100k licensing
purchase for vmware this year anyway, so we were considering the CLA.
THe downside is that the amount of data i back up grows at about 40% per
year, so it might come back to bite us later if we do choose it.

Thanks Tom, very useful feedback. Point taken about having some
overhead to grow. Did you encounter any "small print" that you didn't
expect please?
Also on a more general note, not sure if anyone's using 9.0 yet but the
single biggest problem I face is that every week 95% of the data being
backed up over the weekend is the same as the week before.
I'm assuming D2D combined with the dedupe would reduce the backup window
massively but does anyone have any real world examples as it's something
I can't easily test.
Thanks,
Paul

We have switched and really like it. Essentially you should purchase
what you backup +20% so that you don't have to run out and buy more
licensing tomorrow.
It doesn't make a difference how many servers you backup, how many times
you backup the data or how many media agents you have.
You don't even really need to stay under your limit either because it
lets you continue to backup your data regardless and there is a CLA true
up where you pay the difference.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Subject: [commvault] Capacity Based Licensing
Has anyone moved to capacity based licensing (or is already on it)
please?
Looking at options for an existing Commvault environment where the data
volume is growing and D2D is the ideal solution but difficult to
justify, however the ballpark pricing we've had on converting to a
capacity license might make sense if we factor in growth and some
upcoming possible consolidation of other backup environments that don't
currently use Commvault but would if they could.
As I understand it the model is pretty simply "all you can eat" so long
as you license based off your uncompressed source capacity i.e. if you
have a file server with 10tb of data, a SQL server with 5tb of data, and
an Exchange server with 2tb of data you would buy 17tb of capacity
license and you can back them up however and whenever you want, to disk,
to tape, dedupe, keep it a week, a year, whatever so long as your
uncompressed source capacity isn't more than 17tb?
Thanks,
Paul
