Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Until now we’ve not had D2D capability, now we do.
So, I have a bunch of Storage Policies each of which simply contains a primary copy that goes straight to tape.
I want to keep all the tapes (subject to the retention rules already specified on the copy) but I’d like to now do primary backup as D2D with dedupe, with a selective aux copy (weekly or monthly full).
I’d appreciate any info on the best way to do the transition – ideally I want to phase in the dedupe rather than simply try and move every client to it overnight.
This is on 9.0 with SP1b.
Thanks,
Paul

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Firstly, you can't phase in the dedupe backups. You'll need to cut everything in a policy over at once.
You'll create a new synchronous Secondary Copy in the policy and call it something like PC_DISK. You'll make it a dedupe secondary copy to disk.
Once you have done that, promote the new secondary copy to be primary copy.
You may need to create additional selective secondary copies just to make sure your retention rules are as required.
You may also want to disable your old primary copy (now a synchronous secondary) - that will be up to you depending on whether you want a safety copy of all backups on tape.

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Thanks Mark. From the reading I’ve done since posting I’ve gathered that there is no simple way of phasing the dedupe backups in – seems to come down to enabling it on less important storage policies with fewer clients and hoping it settles down as expected.
Also as you say, I believe that I’ll end up with the primary copy to disk w/dedupe, and a selective copy to pull fulls to tape – though to start with I may just aux copy all backups, not entirely sure yet.
Thanks,
Paul

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Thanks Mark. I’ve just logged a ticket but if you or anyone else know the answer to this I’d be grateful:
I created a new copy on an existing storage policy, enabled deduplication, then set it to be primary. It looks fine, except I don’t see any place where I can set the dedupe block size? On the copy, on the Deduplication/Settings tab the “Type” simply says “Object Level”.
I’ve not yet run a backup against the reconfigured Storage Policy.
Thanks,
Paul

You'll create a new synchronous Secondary Copy in the policy and call it something like PC_DISK. You'll make it a dedupe secondary copy to disk.
Once you have done that, promote the new secondary copy to be primary copy.
You may need to create additional selective secondary copies just to make sure your retention rules are as required.
You may also want to disable your old primary copy (now a synchronous secondary) - that will be up to you depending on whether you want a safety copy of all backups on tape.

I’d appreciate any info on the best way to do the transition – ideally I want to phase in the dedupe rather than simply try and move every client to it overnight.

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Eep, that's Gen1 de-duplication (Object level), not Gen2/Gen3 block-level, so you won't be able to set the block size anyway (which is configured on the SP properties, not the SP Copy properties)
Can you try creating a new copy and see if it still marks it as Object Level ?
Also what Java JRE is this, and SP level?

I created a new copy on an existing storage policy, enabled deduplication, then set it to be primary. It looks fine, except I don’t see any place where I can set the dedupe block size? On the copy, on the Deduplication/Settings tab the “Type” simply says “Object Level”.
I’ve not yet run a backup against the reconfigured Storage Policy.

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
This is 9.0 SP2 with the latest JRE. The Storage Policy is a reasonably old/original one though. On a new Storage Policy the dedupe block size has been set.

If this is 9.0 SP2 and you are still getting object level set as the default on a new dedupe Policy Copy I'd be running for the hills right about now, or calling support.... your call!

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Lol true..
Though maybe before calling support... Try creating a completely new storage policy with block level first, check that it did use block level.. *then* try creating a new sp copy in your existing policy with dedupe enabled On 28-Apr-2011 1:58 AM, "Mark Edwards" <mark.p.edwards < at > gmail.com (mark.p.edwards < at > gmail.com)> wrote:> If this is 9.0 SP2 and you are still getting object level set as the default

Eep, that's Gen1 de-duplication (Object level), not Gen2/Gen3 block-level,
so you won't be able to set the block size anyway (which is configured on
the *SP properties*, not the *SP Copy properties*)
*
*Can you try creating a new copy and see if it still marks it as *Object
Level* ?
Also what Java JRE is this, and SP level?

I created a new copy on an existing storage policy, enabled deduplication,

Deduplication/Settings tab the “Type” simply says “Object Level”.
I’ve not yet run a backup against the reconfigured Storage Policy.

Firstly, you can't phase in the dedupe backups. You'll need to cut
everything in a policy over at once.
You'll create a new synchronous Secondary Copy in the policy and call it
something like PC_DISK. You'll make it a dedupe secondary copy to disk.
Once you have done that, promote the new secondary copy to be primary copy.
You may need to create additional selective secondary copies just to make
sure your retention rules are as required.
You may also want to disable your old primary copy (now a synchronous
secondary) - that will be up to you depending on whether you want a safety
copy of all backups on tape.

So, I have a bunch of Storage Policies each of which simply contains a
primary copy that goes straight to tape.
I want to keep all the tapes (subject to the retention rules already
specified on the copy) but I’d like to now do primary backup as D2D with
dedupe, with a selective aux copy (weekly or monthly full).
I’d appreciate any info on the best way to do the transition – ideally I
want to phase in the dedupe rather than simply try and move every client to
it overnight.
This is on 9.0 with SP1b.

Changing Primary Storage Policy Copy to use dedupe?
Oh I'm already there. According to support -
"there is already a patch that is being created "On an upgraded commcell, secondary copy created for a non-Dedup storage policy may default to Object-level deduplication instead of block-level""
Slightly surprised that nobody has encountered this by now tbh as our environment is far from complex.

If this is 9.0 SP2 and you are still getting object level set as the default
on a new dedupe Policy Copy I'd be running for the hills right about now, or
