Cleaning Tapes misbehaving

Post Cleaning Tapes misbehaving
Hi all,

I have 2 queries regarding cleaning tapes i'm looking for advice on...

1) I have a cleaning cartridge in a specially reserved slot of my Qualstar library, which the library can use to clean its own drives when required. This is a nice manual override, if the software ever gets confused as to the true status of a drive. As the tape is there purely for the Library itself, and is in a reserved slot, it is never seen in the Commvault inventory. That is until last week, when it suddenly appeared in the inventory for the first time ever, and not only that but it has been moved from the reserved slot, into a normal data cartridge slot. Now the tape library interface, reports it no longer has a cleaning tape.

I put the tape back into its reserved slot, deleted it from the inventory, and ran a re-audit of the library, after which all seemed fine. However, just checking things over this evening, i noticed the software has redetected it again, and moved the tape from its reserved slot back to a normal slot?

Not sure if this is a library hardware or Commvault software problem. It's never happened in the 2 years prior to this, and i havn't changed anything when it started. Anyone seen this behaviour before?

2) Also in the software, when the cleaning jobs attempt to run, they have a priority of 666. I'm not sure if this a default setting, but i can't seem to change this on the running job. Hence the cleaning job won't run if there are multiple other jobs queued up with a lower priority. I can't find anywhere else in the software or in the documentation that mentions if the cleaning job priority can be amended. Can anyone enlighten me?

TIA

Mark

Post Cleaning Tapes misbehaving
Mark, I usually find that it is best to have Commvault manage the cleaning. Force the cleaning tape into a Cleaning Tape group if necessary and disable the dedicated slot in the library. That way, if there is ever a mishandling of the cleaning tape, Commvault can manage the location and the tape type correctly.

cheers,

mark.

I just purchased a Dell TL2000 and configured it so that it manages the drive cleaning instead of Commvault. In my particular instance this was done by decreasing the available slots in the library by one less active slot. In that slot I reserved it for the cleaning media, letting the Library manage the cleaning on the drives much the same way you describe. My new library however needed media specifically labeled CLNXXX to do this method. Depending on the library that may be the place to look. I would think its something on the library, as i don't see a Commvault update do anything that is a physical setting on the library however I do recall having to turn off an option in the Commvault software to make this work properly. After running cleanings both way I perfer the reserved slot in the library method since it doesn't eat up cleaning tapes as quickly as the Commvault managed way.
