Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
Yeah. I had that. You need to install all the latest commvault patches onto whatever computer you're running the Console, but you have to do it from the CD or download the patches. The pop up doesn't do squat. The 8 SP5 disk has all but one of the patches.

Hello all,
I've recently started seeing the following pop-up when i run the commcell console on my W2K3 Server
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u184/markey164/CommcellGUIerrors.jpg
If i choose 'yes', it starts to download the files, closes the GUI, restarts the GUI, and a few seconds later the pop-up re-appears informing me about the same updates again.
I tried updating Java from version 6 update 6, to version 6 update 23, but this didn't cure the issue.
Anyone seen this before?
TIA

Why you can just download the CommCell GUI alone, with the latest

They even offer a link for the standalone client, but then you're

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
All I had to do was kill any running jobs, right click on the commserve in the GUI and select install updates for my commserve. Everything was updated automatically after that. Just make sure you also update your media agents at the same time. (note these updates were taken care of when I updated to sp5)

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
If you want to update your GUI with the latest patches already installed on your CommServe (without downloading them from the Internet)
run Install Updates.exe from the CommServe
i.e. From my workstation I run the following
\serverd$Program FilesCommVaultGalaxyCVUpdates8.0.0WindowsInstallUpdates.exe
Hope this is what you are looking for.

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
Yeah .. I resort instead now to using the commcell console via http from the commserve, that way it's always loaded with same patches that the CS has
of course, this means loading IIS onto your CS if you have a problem with that

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
Hi Parag,
No, the message continually re-appears regardless of whether i click yes or no.
When I click yes, it downloads the files, and then closes the Commcell GUI. On restarting the GUI the message re-appears after a few seconds, informing me about exactly the same patches again.
For reference this is Commvault 8.0, and i am running this on the Commserve which has the latest version of Java installed.
Judging by some of the responses, it seems like i'm not the only person seeing this issue.

Mark,
Have you tried selecting to install updates on the commserve? This cleared the prompt for me.

It doesn't install the patches on my Vista client. It just re-starts

I'm not talking about updating my MAs, IDAs, or anything like that.
Just the Java CommCell client on my Vista box. It will NOT apply
updates when you start it and it asks to do so.
The answer I've gotten is to download the entire 8.0SP5 CDROM(s) and
then just re-install from the CDROM. I'd like to just download the
25-50mb of files I need, not the 600Mb of CDROM.

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
Correct. In order for you CommCell to update you have to update your CommServe. The updates will be applied automatically and the next time you run the Java GUI from your vista box it will download a new JNLP to match the updates. The reason I mentioned updating your MAs is because you need to keep your MAs on the same version as your CommServe.

Try connecting to your commserve via UNC path (\comservenameshare) to get to your Commserve's CVUpdates directory ( in the ..GalaxyCVUpdates). Just go to your platform and version (on mine, it's GalaxyCVUpdates8.0.0WindowsServicePacksSP5Updates), go into each patch # and click the .exe to install that update onto your workstation.

Commcell Console - Java GUI updates problem
Expensive way: install a file system ida that way you can right click and select "install updates"... OR
Engineer way
As i work on multiple sites the best way I have found bar using http is to go into the commvault folder on the commserve, in there is a directory called GUI copy this over your existing directory GUI directory on you machine (or rename the old folder).
That way they are matching the exact updates on the commserve , on some sites i have scripted this console update to happen every so often to get around the updates not working from the popup prompt.
one thing to keep in mind are : is the architecture the same (x86/x64) as i have seen where they dont match SSO may stop working
Hope this helps
