Post CommServe transition question
Hello all,

In the coming months we will be upgrading to Simpana 9.
Our CommServe hardware is running Windows 2003 Std x64, and needs to be replaced.

The new hardware will be running Windows 2008 R2.

Any suggestion on whether we should upgrade to Simpana 9 before moving the commServe to the new hardware, or after.

Thanks for your input.

Post CommServe transition question
if you ask me i would prefer to upgrade the hardware first and then go for Simpana 9 version upgrades. The reason is simpana 9 is new version and you dont know how its going to behave after you upgrade from 8 to 9. At this point of time you cant say that version 9 is bugfree till the time you dont use. So better you upgrade the hardware first and in case of any issue solve that first and then go for upgrade on Simpana from 8 to 9. In this way you will have clear pciture whether you getting problem because of hardware updagrade or becasue of simpana upgrade but at the end its your decision. if you have time follow this.

Thanks
Genius

I'm in agreement with this - I've done the same when going from 5.0 to 5.9, 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0 ...

Especially if you have a dedicated Commserve because then your rollback plan is much easier - you would then still have the old CommServe available to go back to if you encounter problems, you're installing on a fresh Windows host as well.

Additionally I always treat CommVault upgrades with a phased approach:

1) Upgrade CommServe (or CS/MA if it's an all-in-one host) - test backup & restore for a couple of clients
2) Wait one business day and see how backups progress
3) Upgrade all other Media Agents - wait another business day
4) Start client upgrades (dependent upon your change control of course..)

For pre-req checks *before* you do anything:

1) If your CS is a VM then you can clone + isolate it and run a test upgrade against it to see if the upgrade path will fail.. worthwhile endeavour Smile

-or-

Go to the automated DBUpgrade test tool on Maintenance Advantage - https://services.commvault.com/mainadv/esupport.asp?script_name=http://esupport.commvault.com/upgradetest&fv=9.0

(This can be found under upgrade resources & assistance)

2) Check Maintenance Advantage for Upgrade recommendations and latest information - also posted under "Upgrade Resources & Assistance" under Additional Info
3) Contact the support desk and ask them about any critical updates prior to your upgrade schedule
