CommVault "admin" account getting locked after upg

Post CommVault "admin" account getting locked after upg 
Hello,

We are having a wierd issue where our admin account for CommVault is getting locked. This is not having any affect on backup jobs but does affect people who try to logon to the console with their account. Until the Commvault accounts gets unlocked no one can access the console. There has been no changes to the account and it has always been setup to "never expire". The account/password work to logon to Commvault. I don't see anywhere in Commcell or the MA's where there could be a problem. All the mount points work, backups restores work fine. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a aging policy on the local user accounts, e.g. the password
needs to be changed each 30 days forcefully ?

When you say admin account do you mean the account used to allow single sign on? What service pack are you on?


We are having other strange issues with authentication that just started after upgrading to sp6.

Hi Gary,

I have had the joy of dealing with that at various times. The usual culprit was either a service using the CV admin account for authentication with a bad password or a static share created again using the CV admin account with a bad password (maybe to a NAS or other CIFS share used by a MA)

Your best best (assuming you are in a Windows environment) is to leverage your domain controller(s) Security Logs and look for authentication failures after you unlock the account. If you have a log audit/consolidation tool this is much easier. There will usually be a few logs showing the host name or IP that is using the bad creds. Just note that once the account is locked any subsequent attempts will also trigger log events, so there is a decent chunk of noise to filter through. There's a MS KB that lists all of the event IDs and there are a few specific to bad passwords rather than attempts to login with a locked account.

Just to add...


1. By default, SQL 2008 Server uses minimum (0 MB) and maximum 2 GB on 32-bit operating systems. This setting can be changed by enabling “Use AWE to allocate Memory” on SQL database but this option is not enabled by default, to bring these settings into effect, SQL server had to be restarted. We set the memory values to 1 GB (min) and 6 GB (max) in our environment.

We faced this issue recently in our environment . This issue rises due to insufficient memory (RAM) or paging space . In order to fix this issue we recycled the sql services on the commserver (after confirmation from commvault support) and the issue got resolved.

I had the same problem after upgrading to 9.0. I did not find the root cause however resetting the password in Active Directory resolved the problem for me.

No I have not. I was going to do that last after all else fails. I seem to get better/faster results posting here first.

to insufficient memory (RAM) or paging space . In order to fix this
issue we recycled the sql services on the commserver (after confirmation
from commvault support) and the issue got resolved.

Hello,

We are having a wierd issue where our admin account for CommVault is
getting
locked. This is not having any affect on backup jobs but does affect
people
who try to logon to the console with their account. Until the Commvault
accounts gets unlocked no one can access the console. There has been no
changes to the account and it has always been setup to "never expire".
The
account/password work to logon to Commvault. I don't see anywhere in
Commcell or the MA's where there could be a problem. All the mount points
work, backups restores work fine. Any help or suggestions would be
greatly
appreciated.
