Configure CDR for Simpana 8 SP5

Post Configure CDR for Simpana 8 SP5
Greetings:

Since version 9 SP1 is delayed, I don't have the latest and the greatest installed.

Currently, my environment use StorageX to replicate data from slow link remote sites back to data center. I would like to roll out CommVault's CDR agent to replace StorageX. I've read book online and tested a simple FAN in, but still have a question.

My destination has many TB of replicated data.
Must I start anew? I'm asking because when I added a pair and click apply, I get a confirm dialog, "Please ensure that the destination path is an empty folder. If the folder has existing data, it may get pruned as part of orphan processing. Do you want to continue?"

Replicate back only newly created or altered data back to data center is critical to me. I don't have the bandwidth to start from zero.

Best Regards

Victor

Post Configure CDR for Simpana 8 SP5
Victor,
Are you taking advantage of Commvault deduplication? If so, note that S9 SP1 will be available at end of month for customer-led upgrades. If you can hold on until that time, DASH copy will be your best approach to setting up DR offsite copies of the remote site disk libraries (if you are doing local backups at remote sites), or source-side dedupe in order to run backups from the remote clients to the data center (sending only new data blocks across the WAN to the central data center).

While replication works (including hardware) for replicating disk libraries, DASH will get you the added benefit of selectivity and end to end reporting and job control per copy, without having to replicate everything in the disk libraries. Check BOL for Simpana 9 DASH.

Will create a secondary (Aux) copy and utilize the Network Optimized Copy option under DASH Copy, put the DDB on the destination Media Agent. The new DDB resiliency features eliminate the need to architect with the shared DDB manager (saves network hops during writes/check ins)
By putting it on the destination MA, in the event you lost the remote sites (MA/ddb sets) you can simply promote the Secondary DASH copy to primary and begin protection there. If store seal occurs on primary side,
Minimizes resource loading contention on the production side too by locating the secondary DDB on the destination side

If you want to continue running CDR you can also do that going forward in S9. There is an out-of-band seeding method that your SE or professional services team can provide in order to get the data onto the desination disk without being subject to the slow WAN link.

Post Configure CDR for Simpana 8 SP5
I am also interested in DASH.

My scenario is I have 400GB of data on a remote site. The site has a local MA and does local backups, I also have an MA at our data centre. If I was to enable DASH from the remote site to the data centre for DR purposes, would the whole 300GB be downloaded initially or can I do an out of band "seeding" like I can with CDR? There is no way I can transfer 400GB over the WAN, it would take weeks.

Hi vieyoung,

To answer your original question:

You can turn off Orphan File deletion in the Replication Set properties (on the Orphan Files Tab) to prevent your data disappearing. I recommend that you try it with a smaller block of data first to make sure that it is behaving as expected and that you get the replication paths right.

However, provided that the file structure is the same at both ends, you should have no problems making this work. The "seeding" that others have referred to just means "having some of the data already in place on the destination". It's not complicated.

Cheers, John.

Victor
