Decommissioned Server Best Practice
In version 9, under control panel, user preferences, you can select “Hide deconfigured clients”. See screenshot below. So they won’t appear in the client tree.
You right click and choose “release license” to deconfigure a client.

To add to what Calvin said, I rename the decomissioned client (in the GUI) as "zzz_yyyymmdd_hostname", where "zzz" is literal (to move the client to the bottom of the left-hand nav, and group all decom'd servers together), and "yyyymmdd" is the date the last data for that host is supposed to expire... that way I know when it's safe to delete the client entirely (I still look at the host's job history as one final check before deleting the client).
Version 8 or 9 also added the ability to totally hide decommissioned hosts from the GUI:

If you plan to be able to restore data to these decomissioned servers in the future, you cannot delete them from the GUI. You can also deconfigure the agents on these decommissioned servers to free up the licenses if you need them for other servers.
If you are on version 9, you can create a client group excluding all your decomissioned clients and just use that group for your view. You can also run reports against this group, which will not include your decomissioned servers.

Hi All,
I am curious what users have found to be a good workflow for disabling decommissioned servers in CommCell?
The goal is:
1. Keep the console clean
2. Retain previous backups for data restore
3. Keep reports clean
Thanks for your thoughts!!
John
