Deduplication

Post Deduplication
I've been using commvault deduplication for a few months now, but I'm usually baffled by it. I can't understand why some things just don't deduplicate well.

My current test is with a 600GB Oracle database. I did the initial backup 10 days ago. No backups since then. I run another full backup, and 350GB of it had to come over the Network. Does that seem like Oracle DB's (or DB's in general) are just not good candidates for using Deduplication?

Post Deduplication
Really depends on the database change rate. How many INSERT, UPDATEs and DELETEs are happening over time and what Oracle database blocks are being changed as a result. Oracle has the potential to allocate and update database blocks through out the database. It depends on the application 'signature' as to where blocks are being changed. Each database application is different.

REDO and Archived REDO logs by definition will not deduplicate. Oracle writes "change vectors" in REDO for committed transactions. Say a transaction changes an integer value from 6 to 99, following a commit the REDO log reflects this change, in the order that transactions that are committing. Best practice would be to define/use a storage policy that is not dedup'ed.
