Deduplication in V9 Questions

Post Deduplication in V9 Questions
So I'm just now starting to do the Global Deduplication in V9 and using client-side deduplication.

I created the Global Deduplication Storage policy. But then when I create the actual storage policy for clients, I'm locked into using 1 media agent.

I have 5 media agents. Does that mean I have to split all of my jobs up into 5 storage policies if I don't want to funnel it all through 1 MA?

Also, for anyone more knowledgeable on this, I may have a lot more questions.

Post Deduplication in V9 Questions
Hi Bill,

I've seen this situation somewhere before. You will need to have 2
additional servers:

- Index server (New in Simpana 9)
- Dedup DDB server

The index server is a common administration for all MA's who actually can
keep their local index cache.
The index server keeps a copy of these index caches and has an overall index
role.

Documentation:
http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/en
glish_us/features/index_cache_server/basic.htm

If you are working in a gridstor config or use several media agents, the you
would need a common Dedup DDB server.
This server manages the deduplication handling for the MA's, also called
Dedup DB Manager.

DeDUPEDB MANAGER (SIDB Manager in 7.0)
Requirements:Role-dedicated Server. DeDUPEDB Manager host cannot be a
production data mover or application server or own storage for a CIFS/NFS
shared disk library.
Fastest possible I/O path to internal drive or dedicated LUNLocal drive set,
configured for HIGH I/O (low access time) for DeDUPEDB200GB, or more, HW
RAID0 storage for DeDUPEDB, formatted to 4K (see DDB Disk Performance
Targets section) 64bit OS and largest possible allocation of RAM per OS
Platform supportNot more than four live SIDBs on the DeDUPE Manager
hostDisable antivirus scans of the DeDUPEDB volumeCVBuildSIDB for DeDUPEDB
volume protection (8.0)If SAN attached, a dedicated HBA channel to the DDB
LUN.

Post Deduplication in V9 Questions
I did that. I have a Media Agent that is dedicated to the Dedupe Database. It is not a data mover, but I only installed MA software on it. CV didn't tell me I needed anything else.

My shared index cache sits on a NAS share, and I have the Media Agents also using the Intermediate Index Cache locally on each box.

Post Deduplication in V9 Questions
Hi Bill,
As far I know, you cannot use a shared Index Cache and a local cache at the same time.
In Simpana 9 there is a new entity called Index Cache server, that is somewhat else then a shared location (NAS).
So in my opinion, you would have to use that NAS share exclusive, ore switch over to this new Index Cache server and then combine that functionality with the MA's local cache.
- Use centralized Index Cache (NAS) -or-
- Use Index Cache Server (Combined with local MA cache)
I hope this helps Smile
Kind regards
