When we were on version 6.1 with Exchange 2003, I was told not to backup the exchange database files using the file system backup, but to use the Exchange Database IDA. We have been on Exchange 2010 using Simpana 8 for backups. Is this true for Simpana 8 as well? Thank you.

Yes, that is correct. The reason is that the Exchange databases are in a HOT mode meaning the FS backup will skip these files. No matter what version of SImpana you are on it is best practice to use the appropriate agent for the type of backup you want to perform.

Not only does using the Exchange IDA make sure the backups are application consistent, but it also runs an integrity check on the backed up DB’s to ensure that you’ve got a good backup. If the integrity of the backup is constantly failing, there’s a real high chance that the actual DB actually has some problem too. This allows you to catch underlying DB problems a lot earlier than you might otherwise.
