Post Is Commvault VSS provider a Hardware Snapshot provider use b
Hi All,

I can see the Books online doesnt mention anything about installing a Hardware VSS provider on
the client involved when implementing Snapprotect with any storage arrays supported by
Commvault. It only mentions installing the Commvault VSS
provider. Does this imply that the Commvault VSS provider drives the creation of the hardware
snapshot in the array?

Any clarifications on this would help a lot for a confuse mind

No, CommVault's VSS provider is a software component but it does gets used in a SnapProtect workflow for specific SnapProtect-enabled Application backups, i.e. SQL  (Can't remember if it's used for Exchange backups)

Hardware snapshots are driven by the MediaAgent module which gets the info required to login to your storage array from the CommServe (control panel -> array information) ... deployment notes in BOL should talk about deploying MA module alongside your iDA's for a SnapProtect scenario, otherwise would recommend chatting to your account manager about the scenario you are looking to use SnapProtect in

What iDA are you looking to use with SnapProtect? (vmware, sql, exchange, file, etc.)

Cheers,
Luke

So is my understanding correct that you dont need to install a hardware VSS provider from a Vendor itself ( Equallogic and Compellent doesnt mention aything to install the Hardware VSS provider ) inorder to create a hardware snapshot is that correct? If this is the case the way I see it is Commvault client/ Media agent will use management ip address of the storage to create the snapshot ( that is if the username to login has admin rights on the array )

Hi Mark,

You are correct, we don't use hardware VSS providers. SnapProtect uses the APIs provided by the hardware storage vendors to connect to the storage controllers and manage the creation/deletion/rollback/replication of snaps. So you do need to use the IP of the controller's management port and credentials. The specific requirements varies from one vendor to another but this is all documented in BOL at http://documentation.commvault.com.

Regards,

Phil
