Auxiliary Copies don't affect backup job performance by the way - they're simply an adminstrative job that shifts data between storage tiers, in this case, you'd intend on using it to shift data from secondary storage [magnetic library] to the tape copy.
From an architecture point of view, what I am suggesting is to shift your Mailbox backups from D2T (Direct to tape) to D2D2T / Disk-to-disk-to-tape.
You will need sufficient disk space to hold at least 1 week's worth of mailbox backups, to ensure that when you run a Synthetic Full [SYN FULL] backup, that it doesn't need to feed from tape to complete the SYN FULL.
