Expected NetApp NDMP Restore speeds from tape through NRS
Author Message
Post Expected NetApp NDMP Restore speeds from tape through NRS
I'm testing a restore of a very large volume (1.9TB with 6.6 Million files).
We use NDMP Remote Server (NRS) on our MediaAgent (MA) to backup our filers over our lan.

I'm performing a restore from tape directly to a temporary volume on my filers FC aggregate.
This means the data is traveling from tape through NRS on the MediaAgent and to the volume.
Our tapes are LTO-3.
The only place I can think to get an idea of transfer rates is my expanding my library (In commcell console), right click the drive, select 'Show Throughput'.
The throughput is showing 5.0 MB/sec (17.5781 GB/hr)

Our filers have 2 bonded gig links for 2Gbps connection. MA has 4 bonded gig links for 4Gbps. None of these links are saturated, they actually see very little utilization of around 5% on filer and less during the day on our MA.
the MA and the filer have plenty of available CPU and memory. Filer IOPS are really low. Disk read/writes on MA are low.

Basically, none of my resources are taxed and the job is running very slowly. I performed the same restore last week from the maglib on the MA and the job completed in ~2 days.
At the current rate the job will take ~5 days.

Is this throughput to be expected?
Can anyone point me to CommVault Documentation that explains the throughput for restore in my scenario.

Hope this all made sense.

-Jon

Hi Jon,

Haven't tried this with NRS, but have you tried running the restore with Direct Access Restore disabled?

I know when I'm performing large volume restores with Netapp filers (tape shared between CommVault MA's and Netapp filer) that DAR is only fast for smaller restores (generally 20-30% size of the volume) ... once I want to restore large blocks, say, the entire volume, then non-DAR restores are the way to go.

Supporting documentation here:

Kind Regards,
Luke

I should have included in the original email that I turned DAR off for the restore.
