We have 16 storage policies separated into two index cache. Roughly 300 clients. Trying to figure out if gridstor will help us or not.

Having a shared index cache helps out if you have a lot of tape contention (like you have to wait for a MA to finish X jobs before this other restore can start). I've been using it with 2 Media Agents and 600 clients and I like the functionality of it, but I feel like I could try to work around it if I absolutely had to. However, I'll be at 5 media agents in a month or two, and with that much division of labor, I don't know if I could do without it

In my opinion Gridstor is effective when you have multiple mediaagents, and multiple drives. You can load balance your jobs between media agents and drives. Also for path failure, Gridstor can be very effective.

When having 16 Storage policies, Gridstor might be effective, but maybe it isn't effective at all. It all depends on available drives, cause you will use one drive per storage policy.

When you have troubles with your backup window, reducing the number of storage policies can help you, because you can multiplex streams to a drive then.

Regards,
Bart

We have 5 drives and either full or incrementals running 16 hours a day seems they are running really slow lately.

For large environments, Gridstore seems to be a must have. We have a library with 60 drives, spread out and/or shared by 15 MA's running about 1300 jobs a day. Having the ability to offline MA's for patching, etc is awesome, but when an MA goes offline unexpectedly, our CommCell keeps running without issue. That makes all the difference.

Gridstore by itself does not make backups run faster, but could increase availability and your device utilization. If you are experiencing slow backups on tape, you should look at multiplexing, the number of streams you have coming in your Media Agent. If you have too little or too many, that could slow down your jobs. Do you see a lot of pending jobs in your Job Manager?

Also, make sure you don't have an anti-virus scanning your Media Agent at the same time. This is a common issue impacting performance. If you are dealing with lots of small files, Data Classification Enabler could also help by reducing the scan time.

If that does not fix your problem, the best thing to do would be to contact support and have them look at your logs and maybe your CS DB.
