Gridstor with Windows Media Agents
Author Message
Post Gridstor with Windows Media Agents
I am trying to figure out how to configure Gridstor using 2 Windows media agents. So I have to Windows 2008 media agents connected to an iSCSI SAN. Since I can't access the same LUN from 2 different Windows boxes at the same time, how can Gridstor be configured.

I thought about using Windows clustering, but it seems like there should be a simpler solution.

First, make sure they're using the same shared index cache. Then you need to create shared libraries (this isn't necessary if you aux copy to another shared library, either disk or tape, but it's nice to have). So let's just say you had 2 SAN volumes attached to each MA.

Create 4 shared disk paths in the library config - Vol1 on MA1 is local, and also shared with MA2, but set to read-only. Vol2 on MA1 is local and shared with MA2 read only.

Vol1 on MA2 is local, and shared with MA1 read-only, Vol2 on MA2 is local and shared with MA1 read-only (you'll just use windows/active directory to share these out).

Then make your 2 shared libraries. Voila. Everything is shared.

Now, if you don't want to go that far, and these MA's have a shared tape library or something, as long as they're sharing index cache, Gridstor will let them do restores on the others backups, but only on data that has completed its aux copy.

Hopefully I got that all right.

Let me take a step back.  What is Gridstor really for?  We were hoping to use it for failover capabilities (backups and restores) should one MA completely die.  But it sounds like it is more for continuity of backups, but you have to get your failed MA back online in order to do restores or access the data that was presented to that MA.  Or at a minimum the failed MA needs to have an OS and file share in order for the good MA to see the data that was written through the failed MA.
