Subject: [commvault] How do I format a tape

Good day all.
How do I format a tape? I can only see options for erase contents, but not a "format" instruction.
Thanks a lot.

Unless things have changed since i last checked, I believe you need to use the TapeToolGUI utility located under the Commvault base directory.

Here's some basic instructions i've copied from my wiki if it helps.....

1. Load the required tape
2. Run the TapeToolGui.exe utility located under "C:Program
FilesCommVaultSimpanaBase"
3. Before formatting, you probably
want to check the loaded tape has the expected OML. To do this, select
'Read Label' for the tape operation, then click
the drop down list against 'Tape Name' and select the Tape Drive you
loaded the tape into. Then click Start, read the output, and
confirm the 'barcode=' field matches the expected OML.

4. If it does, change the Tape Operation to 'Format', ensure the
correct Tape Drive is still selected, then click 'Start'. After a
few seconds, the output should indicate that the Tape has been
formatted.
5. Change the Tape Operation to 'Read Label', and it should now say something like "**This media does not have a valid Galaxy Media Label Version 3.1 **". This is expected as the tape has been formatted and now has no OML. A
new OML (On Media Label) will be written when the tape is next loaded
for use.

6. Once done, check the tape is back in the Default Scratch Pool, ready for
use.
Hope this helps

Cheers

Mark

Thanks for the reply so for what you're saying it is better to only use the "Delete a media" and "Erase Contents" and only use these other tools if I'm having issues with tapes?

Here's a problem I had awhile back.

I use IBM 3592 tapes (500gb). One time, I noticed that my tapes were filling up at 150GB. It turns out that this batch of recertified tapes came from a company that was using these IBM tapes with a special formatting that increased speed at the expense of capacity.

Also, the utility that reformats IBM tapes only has the format feature on unix (their windows tool did everything except format).

I had to zone a unix server to my tape drives to do the reformat... ugh.

the tl;dr version: Manufacturers have the tools to do your reformatting. At least IBM did.

I think it depends on what you're trying to do. I had to use the IBM tape formatting tool because of an actual problem with the tape. If you're just wanting to reuse a tape in commvault, then use the erase or delete features (erase lets the data still be used for restores until the tape gets re-used)

The only time I've used the TapeToolGUI was when we added a new library with a barcode reader. We needed to change the tapes labels at this same point, and CV got somewhat confused when I tried to use a tape that had one OML and another barcode that disagreed.

We deleted the media from CV, then formatted the tapes with the TapeToolGUI program. Now, the barcodes are accepted properly and a new OML gets written to these newly named tapes.

If we were just going to be changing a storage policy that the tapes were used for, or to accelerate a tape's reuse, I would just do Delete Contents within CV.

OK thanks for your replies.
I've used only the erase contents instruction and after that it tells me which Scratch Pool to put the tape on.
If I have 2 custom Scratch Pools and the Default Scratch Pool, how do I make sure that tapes always go to the custom Scratch pools?
Thanks.

two ways - manual or barcode rules

manual - once you've put a scratch tape into a custom scratch pool, every time the tape is aged it will go back into this pool

barcode rules - http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/features/media_operations/manage_barcodes.htm#Manage_Media_Using_Barcode_Patterns
