How to backup specific folders in a VM with the Virtual Serv
Author Message
Post How to backup specific folders in a VM with the Virtual Serv
I would like to backup only specific folders inside a VM, using the VSA. I do not want to backup the full VM and do selective file restore, because it is too long.
According to the documentation, it seems to be possible to backup only specific files/folders with the File Level Backup Type. So, I checked it in the subclient properties. But I cannot find a way to select the specific folders. What am I missing?

I don't use the feature yet, but I have been told by commvault that vmware's newest version of vcb will allow file-level backup, but you'd still need a filesystem idataagent on the virtual machine if you wanted to restore at a file level directly to the server (I think there's a vmware process with vcb to insert them if you don't go that way).

As I said, this was something new that was mentioned to me a few weeks ago that I will be persuing soon, but haven't had CV sales in to discuss it in-depth.

The three VSA backup types , File, Volume and Disk all provide backup of individual files.

To backup a specific set of files/folders you would probably create a new subclient and add that server by itself in the Content tab. Once added, choose either File or Volume level backup type and then you can use the filters tab to exclude all other folders other than the ones you want to backup.

Disk level backup won't allow you to do this as you are backing up the entire VMDK/VMX files etc with an option to scrape file data information from within those and thus the filters are disabled. Volume level backups I have found to be fastest but they don't provide an easy way to restore an entire VM.

The VSA agent has file level backup mode. In that mode it allows filtering folders to backup only a subset of folders.
