Backup Central

Hello-
Our database team currently controls all MS SQL and Oracle backup jobs. We have recently put in CommVault and are looking at running the IDA SQL Server agent in place of normal SQL maintenance plans. Our DB team is skeptical of using this agent and wants to know what the advantages are. Can anyone reply back with their thoughts on the pluses and minuses of using this SQL agent? FYI..We have a CLA so cost is not a hot topic right now.

Used SQL/Oracle agents for many years now without issues:

Key benefits are:

1. If Commvault says the job is succesful you have a good backup. With SQL maint plans it is a two step process i.e. SQL plan to flat file and then backup flat file. If commvault file backup completes ok NO guarntee the SQL maintenance plan is running so backups NOT guaranteed.

2. CV agent manages/deletes all the old SQL transaction logs so no sudden running out of disk space

3. Point in time restores with SQL agent

4. Simple restores, easy as copying a file, just select DB and restore.

5. Easy cross system restores, even links restored db into master so ready to go after restore, no SQL work, except users/permissions.

6. Reduced disk space as backup is straight from SQL to MA, no "temporary" flat file backups

7. Faster backups as only data, not empty space is backed up.

Similar benefits with Oracle, plus CV writes the RMAN scripts dynamically for both backup and restores.

DBA's may be nervous as it reduces their "job"
