Media Agent Spec?
Author Message
Post Media Agent Spec?
I need to look at speccing up a new MA soon. Our requirements are pretty simple, in Commvault speak I think we simply need one Building Block.

Does anyone have any recent experience of something like a Dell R510 or HP DL180 with a mix of fast SSD/SAS for the DDB and a bunch of bulk nearline SAS for the maglib volumes?

If so, what spec did you go with and how has it performed please?

We’re using 9.0 SP3b with client side dedupe.

Thanks,
Paul

Post Media Agent Spec?
My commvault rep suggested to me that we not keep the DDB on the same server as a data mover, but we do about 600 jobs per night on 5 data mover media agents (and then 1 for the DDB), so your solution may be okay.

I use HP DL380's with 16 cores, 24 GB of RAM x5 MA's. They are currently attached through a brocade switch to a EMC Symmetrix (10 usable TB per MA, and then a tape library that's shared to all of them and our mainframe), but the disk libraries will change this year so that they will have their own storage.

My commserve is a VM, but it's not running all that great compared to when it was a physical box (Commvault did okay us to use a VM though, it was in their design of our environment).

Post Media Agent Spec?
Thanks Bill, we're not in that league though in terms of job numbers or level of storage (assuming a Symmetrix costs what I think it costs).

We currently get by OK with everything (DDB and maglib) on a SATA Equallogic as that's what I had spare when we changed to doing D2D2T, but it's filling up and whilst it works I suspect things could be optimised better given a fresh start.

Thanks,
Paul
