Post Methods to backup 50TB on a Netapp
Hello all,

If you were suddenly asked how much it would cost to backup 50TB on a Netapp, and to provide this asap, what questions would you be asking? Currently, the only information i have is that data must be kept online and can't be archived. Data will only be 5-10TB to start with, but is being provisioned for a total of 50TB. I suspect deduplication options will be limited as this will be research type datasets.

At the moment all options are open, as they are just spec'ing up the storage, but as usual backup is an after thought.

My backup environment, consists of a dedicated FC connected network, across 2 sites. Each site has a Media Agent with 1Gb connection, and a large expandable Library fitted with LTO4 drives. The plan is to backup the Netapp to one of those sites, and expand said library accordingly.

I've inherited my existing infrastructure, so havent had to do any previous in depth research, understanding and analysis of all the different ways in which this could be done, and all the associated advantages and disadvantages. Hence my request for advice.

Ultimately, my question is what are my options in order to achieve a full backup of 50TB within a weekend window? Let's say for arguments sake, i have around £20k to spend.

Initial thoughts:

* Should i go NDMP or backup via a mount on a windows/Linux node?
* What advantages/disadvantages of various storage protocols (eg iSCSI, FC FCoE) should i factor into this?
* If i go NDMP, am i right that the 1Gb connections on my Media Agents are not a bottleneck, as data is written directly from the NAS to tape?
* Should i go disk to tape, or disk to disk to tape using additional methods to speed up backup?

TIA

Mark

Post Methods to backup 50TB on a Netapp
Are the LTO drives fiber connected? (though I've always dealt with Fiber drives, so not sure of other methods' performance).

Is this NAS?

If so, NDMP would probably be the fastest way to get the data from the netapp. It bypasses your media agent (though your MA still indexes it for restoring and file browsing) and dumps directly to tape (or disk if you choose, but with that amount of data, I'd use tape) over the fiber. My EMC Celerra pushes about 500 GB/Hour per tape drive. Netapp should perform just as well.

That said, the NDMP licenses from commvault aren't super cheap. You're looking at something about (I'll try the money conversion in my head) 5500ish pounds? (somewhere around $8000).

You might want to get with your NetApp vendor to see if NDMP can get all that data off in your window. At least with Commvault you can split it up so you don't have to do all 50 TB in a single weekend. It could probably be broken up throughout the week if you can't meet the window.

If you go the NDMP route, there's a separate license you need to buy if you want to restore the data anywhere besides the original location. Make sure that's included.

An alternative is putting file system agents on each server connected to the netapp. The pros: You can restore this data anywhere (NDMP restores can only go to original location and the server you've designated as an alternate restore server). The cons: You're using your LAN, so you're stuck with 1 Gbps, and your backups will go a LOT slower.
