NDMP Restore to windows
Author Message
Post NDMP Restore to windows
We used to be able to restore NDMP data from our NetApp Backups to the file system on our MediaAgent that was running the NDMP Remote server.
I have not done this is a long time.
I tried it, and no longer have the option to restore to the MediaAgent.
I checked the install media and found that there is an option for ‘NDMP Restore Enabler’.
Did this become an extra license somewhere along the way?

It is a separate license, but when we ordered our NDMP license (through Dell) it came with the NRE and one other piece.

Yeah it appears so, I opened up a case on this as well. Now they are charging for something we have paid for already in version 8. You use to be able to uncheck the restore to same folder check box, type in the UNC location that you wanted to restore too, then hit the advanced button and impersonate user to give credentials to the UNC path.

This broke us as we often need the ability to restore to a UNC path that is actually an F5 appliance that does file tiering for us. So far support has not been any help on this issue. I have been trying to prove to them that this was available in version 8 to no avail so far.

Please complain.

Post NDMP Restore to windows
Back in Simpana 7.0 the “NDMP Restore Enabler” (NRE) was split out of the “NDMP Remote Server”. This change was needed to allow more flexibility in where NRE could be installed. The NDMP Remote Server can only be installed on MediaAgent machines and is used for allowing file server backups to write to MA storage locations – so it adds to the MediaAgent functionality. The NDMP Restore Enabler can be installed on Windows and UNIX FS iDA clients to allow file server backup data to be restored to that client – so it adds to the FS iDA functionality. This split removes the restriction of only being able to restore to MAs and allows only NRE to be installed without also installing the full NDMP remote server and MA. There can be environments which use NRE but have no NDMP Remote Server at all.

As for charging for something that was already paid for, I do not believe this is the case at all. With this split customers can install NRE where it is needed without needing to pay for the full NDMP Remote Server and MA. The prices for the NDMP Remote Server and NDMP Restore Enabler were adjusted accordingly.

I do not recall the NAS iDA having UNC path destination capability even in 6.1 before the split. Definitely not in 8.0 – I have an 8.0 environment and it does not have that option – if you try to force the UNC path destination the GUI gives an error that the path is invalid. The browse and restore from the Windows FS iDA does allow restore to a UNC path as described (uncheck the option to restore to the same folder option and use the advanced button to set the user) but that is not for restoring NAS iDA backups.

Thanks,
Duncan

No offense, Duncan, but Commvault licensing is kind of ridiculous. We purchased the NDMP license through Dell and without the other 2 licenses that come with it, it can ONLY back up. We had to complain to our CV rep that we weren't given the functionality that we thought we were getting when we said "we want NDMP licenses." We had to get the other 2 pieces added on just to make it function like a FS iDA that we were used to using.

You can justify it however you want. We have to pay for what we need to do our jobs, but you have to at least see our side of things that licensing is extremely complicated, and what we think we're getting and what we actually get when we want a certain kind of functionality are often very different things.

I suppose I'm saying to have a little compassion for Jon. Something worked before, and now it doesn't. He now needs to pay for something he didn't need before. Par for the course.

You can install FS agent as a “Restore Only Agent”. This does not require any license. So no additional cost. Restore is always License Free.
