Backup Central

Hello all,

I just started reading about the ability to backup our NetApp filers via SnapmirrorToTape. I realize this is block level and that restores will require a full restore for an individual file. I'm interested in learning more.

Can someone give me a brief breakdown as to what would be required?

Currently we backup our filers via NDMP NAS agents on our Windows MediaAgents to disk and then aux copy to tape. We perform Weekly full and daily incremental backups. We have large snapshot reserves on our filer volumes and rarely need to go to tape for a restore(once or twice a year), and even when we do, we have to recall tapes from Iron Mountain so it's expected to take a while. Our MediaAgents are performing compression of the data as it's being written to the maglib. this is a bit resource intensive on the MediaAgents. We don't have problems meeting our backup windows.

Our tape library has 2 FC drives connected to our SAN switch and the 2 MediaAgents share the 2 drives with the Shared Storage License. We are using GridStor in Round Robin on the MediaAgents.

Our Filers only serve up CIFS data, no NFS, no FC LUNS, No iSCSI. We do have FC controllers in our filers, but they are not currently in use. Our filers are licensed for FCP (Fibre Channel Protocol), iSCSI, and NFS. We also have a SnapMirror license installed.

What would I need to do to be able to backup direct to tape from the filers? Do I need any other CommVault Licenses? I know the filers would need to be connected to the SAN, and we have available licensed ports on the switch to do so.

What else do I need to do?

Is there a possibility of incremental backups when doing this block level backup?
Can the data on the tapes be Aux copied back to the maglib on our MediaAgents if we wanted another copy there?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi Jon,

The SnapmirrorToTape NAS iDA backup is a block level backup. Restores will require a full restore of the entire volume – including all the snapshots. There is no capability to restore individual files. The restore will replace any data on the volume being restored to. Incremental backups are not supported when using SnapmirrorToTape. For file servers running ONTAP 8.0 or later there is a backupset properties setting for “Image Backup Set” – if that option is selected all backups of all subclients in that backupset will use SnapmirrorToTape. There are no additional licenses needed for this feature. You mentioned that on the magnetic library you are using compression – compression will continue to work with SnapmirrorToTape, but if you are also using deduplication your dedup percentage will likely not be as good.

To backup directly to a tape on the fileserver, the file server will need to see the tape drives as you indicated. Using the Library and Drive Configuration tool you can use the “Detect/Config Devices” option to detect NDMP devices – it will allow you to select a MediaAgent (to use for detection) and a file server (to detect tape devices on). The tape drives will be detected and will be matched with the existing tape drives and a new drive pool will be created. That drive pool will be associated with the MediaAgent and file server selected – so if that drive pool is put into a storage policy, any NAS iDA backup using that storage policy will use that MA for the backup and for doing the tape operations. The arm changer can be driven by the MediAgent or by the file server. The same file server can be detected from more than one MediaAgent to setup a Gridstor configuration – create a new storage policy and add data paths for the file server drive pools – assign this storage policy to your NAS iDA subclients.

Data can be auxcopied from the file server attached tape to the MediaAgent magnetic library/tape as long as the NDMP Remote Server (NRS) is installed on that MediaAgent. Since you are already backing up to the magnetic library you already have NRS.
