No valid index data for client (netware)

Post No valid index data for client (netware)
Hello-
Group always bail me out, so I thought I would take another shot with you gurus. Thanks in advance.

Have already escalated this to CommVault support, but really need an answer. Running V8 sp5 with about 450 jobs running nightly spread among 4 media agents with shared index cache, writing to a clariion cx4 (fibre) and clariion Ax4 (iSCSI). Each media agent owns its luns and has read access to all others. One big job with a netware agent has been failing for sometime and can't figure out why. Jobs finish as successful but when you try to browse the backup you get "No valid index data for client..." and restore fails. Checked the switch it is going into and don't see errors. Have created 2 subclient jobs to break up backup and both run successful but still have the cache error.

In the past we have had some issues with our shared index cache but support usually has my backup guy reboot the media agents and that clears it up. Going to v9 sp3 very soon, but have to resolve this issue asap.

Regards,
Erik

Is this a full backup?  Is it a lot of data?  How many days can your Index Cache hold?  It may be set to the 35-day default, but it may be purging too quickly if there isn't enough space to hold a new cycle for the other jobs that run nightly.

That wouldn't seem right?  If the IC was purging, then he should have received a Index Restore request prompting him for approval.

If it's saying no valid index data ...

1. Is this Netware File System, or Groupwise or NDS ?

2. How are you performing the browse?  Browse Backup Data, or from the Backup History.

3. Have you tried performing a Browse using "Use Exact Index" ?  (don't think it's likely this is it, but can't hurt to tick it off the troubleshooting list...)

4. How is your Index cache Shared .. from a Windows server, or a dedicated NAS host?  Is opportunistic locking disabled?

5. Are you having this problem on any other Netware hosts (is it affecting all hosts, is it Media Agent-specific, or is it just specific to this one individual client).

6. Have you tried forcing the browse through other media agents instead of leaving it on the default "Any Media Agent" to see if the symptoms change?

7. Are all the subclient tests you've done just to do with this one volume (assuming Netware FS backups) ?  What about other volumes on the netware server, can you create a test backup set/subclient and do a backup of a single file to test? (i.e. something from SYS:)

Luke

Thank you for the suggestions. Turned out we got the issue fixed by support.
Luke-
Basically issue was tied to your number 4 question. Turns out our dedupe and shared index cache db's were hosted on the same server (2008 windows) which was causing a tremendous amount of IO on the box. We moved the shared index cache to a much lower usage MA and backups ran last night with no hiccups. Thank you for insight...

  Hello-
Group always bail me out, so I thought I would take another shot with you gurus.

Regards,
Erik
