Post Open VCB VM Backup Question
Hi,

I apologize for some of the very generic questions that I have, but I'm hoping to work out some general principles and configurations. We want to backup around 2-5 Terabytes of Disk Level VMDKs. AT this time we are hitting a wall in terms of how long it's taking. However rather than dealing with my specific case, I'm wondering about other people's experience in generalities.

Is anyone trying to backup this much data using VCB and the Virtual IDA only?

What are the limiting factors on VCB typically?

I've heard some various discussions on ideal data readers for VCB in the 4-6 range is this accurate and why this number?

Assuming you had a beefy MediaAgent which also housed the VCB process, how long would you expect a VCB backup of 1 TB to take?

If you tact De-Dup on to this how much of a performance hit do you take in terms of time to process?

Again, I apologize for the generic questions. I'm trying to get my head around if VCB is a realistic method of doing our primary backups within a 24 hour window.

Post Open VCB VM Backup Question
Hi,
One of the issues of VCB is snapshot problems. If for some reason previous snapshots do not get cleared out or there is some other problem in creating the snapshots that will stall VCB. Also since snapshots are created on the same LUN as the VM itself, if the LUN runs out of space there will be a major problem. Restoring is also an issue because restore of individual VMs will first need to be done on the VCB server itself from where users can access and restore it. But the last point also depends upon your setup.

Post Open VCB VM Backup Question
Hi there,

This is my first foray into this group, so first off, hello!

I previously worked on CommCell that was backing up large amounts of data (7TB) with the virtual IDA and that system wasn't too bad. Most issues were simply due to VMWare... Missing or corrupt snapshots caused the biggest headaches and would make it appear as though the backups were taking forever when in reality they had hit an error and CommVault failed to realise. Once we had our heads around that fault, we found that the backups using the Virtual IDA were reasonably quick (although probably not as quick as file-level). It would take anywhere between 3-6 hours to backup about 7 VMs of varying sizes to a dedicated MA with SAN attached disk. Keep in mind this was without dedup and the single system was running both the MA and Virtual IDA. I would expect the slowdown to be dependent on how meaty your VCB proxy is but ultimately shouldn't be too much.

CV consultants insist that you need a dedicated physical MA for this as it is pretty intensive work.

Unfortunately it has been a while since I worked with VCB, so I cannot give you a real estimate on how long it might take you, but I hope this helps anyway.

Cheers,
Greg
