What is the preferred method to limit the number of tapes used in an
Aux copy job?

I have a policy that stores 60 days on disk for the primary copy and
then spins data to tape every Friday. However, we just ran our first
Aux copy job for 10TB of data and it consumed over 50 LTO5 tapes
compressed!

I believe the answer lies in the properties page of the tape copy
definition within the storage policy, but when I try change the number
to combine the streams, I get an interested message about SQL data
having to restore to disk first before becoming usable (we do have
some SQL data within this storage policy).

In anycase, just wondering what my optioins where here to limit the
number of LTO5 tapes used during a backup job. Is combining the
streams that only way to accomplish this task? Thank you.

Regards,

Paul M.

Post Options to minimize # of LTO5 tapes used for Aux Copy Jobs
Hi Paul,

How is your Aux Copy configured? If you only kickoff one job and do not use the "Selective" Aux Copy option, you are probably ending up with all the jobs done during being pushed to tape, including full and incrementals for all subclients assigned to the storage policy.

This may explain the number of tapes. Also, don't forget that data in a deduped pool will get re-hydrated to be written to tape. So if you see 10TB of "Written to disk" data, this may represent a substantially larger size on tape without dedupe.

With a "Selective" Aux Copy, you can pick only the clients and job type you want to get on your tapes. In your case, you should use the time based selective and go with weekly. This will pick only the weekly fulls to copy to tape.

See here for the documentation: http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/features/auxiliary_copy/auxiliary_copy.htm#Selective_Copies

Regards,

Phil
