Outlook Archiving Question

Post Outlook Archiving Question
I am currently setting up archiving with our Exchange 2007 server. I am doing some testing and I am having an issue on the stubs remaining after a job has been aged. Is there any way for when an email archived job ages that it removes the stubs within Exchange? I have the license for end users to add messages to stub erase list and when an erase stub job runs it removes it from the archive policy but I want to know can I go the other way..

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

I agree with the previous answer of a new backupset along with the Selective backup I mentioned.

Here's the deal:

If the ONLY thing you're ever going to put to tape are full backups, a 2nd copy done as a Selective and set to the weekly fulls (or manually chosen) will work.

If at some point you think you may want to do a Differential or Incremental backup to tape, creating another backupset is the way to go.

Looking at both, the second backupset is the least complicated as far as merging into your backup environment, but it means pulling more data from the system being backed up, as opposed to your media agent.

Here's how it will look:

You're doing 2 different actions here.

1) Monday-Friday Differential

2) Saturday (just as an example) is a full.

If you do this as a selective backup (and you set the retention to have extended retention for the Monthly full... I assume you wanted the monthly to have longer retention), Once the full backup is done on Saturday to disk, the backup to tape will be made from the data already on your media agent. You're not using up the resources of the server being backed up (or its network).

If you do this as a second Backupset, it will look like this:

1) Monday-Friday Differential (to disk)

2) Saturday Full Backup (to disk)

3) Second Saturday Full Backup (to tape).

The selective was doing #3 from your media agent's disk, the second Backupset is pulling it from the server.

Both will give you what you need to get the job done, but Selective backup copies can only be full backups. If you wanted to copy an incremental or differential to tape, that copy wouldn't work. You'd have to do it as a Synchronous Aux Copy.

Ng, I think you need to be a little clearer what you're wanting to do.
If you have your server, do you want to backup to disk and then copy from the disk backups to tape?
Or, do you want to be able to backup your server to disk on week 1, 2 and 3, and week 4 backup directly from the server to tape?
Paul

But those would be copies, let me explain:
I want to run Daily Differential jobs and a Weekly Full to Disk then I would like to run a Weekly Full and a Monthly Full to Tape.

So maybe a copy won't work here, right?
Thanks for the reply.

Good Day All.
How do I setup a job to backup to Disk and hours later execute the same job now to Tape.
Since I modify the Default subclient to use a Tape Library how do I tell it to use a Magnetic Library later?

Thanks a lot.

Post Outlook Archiving Question
You have the following options on the properties of the subclient...  By default, Preserve stubs until the media has been pruned is enabled - are you sure that the job has been aged from all storage policy copies and not just the Primary disk copy?  (Generally with an archiving deployment you'd have a disk and a tape copy, in case the disk copy fails or is corrupted)

Also, was the email stub ever moved from its original location, and have you run an archive job AFTER you aged/pruned the archiving job?

(From < at >  http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/en-us/universl/subclient/migrules_dmex.htm)

Stub Rule
  • Preserve stubs until the media has been pruned
Specifies whether stubs will be allowed to exist in a mailbox or public folder until the media retention time has been met and data aging has been run.
  • Prune stub only after n days
Specifies that stubs will be pruned after the number of days entered. This value determines the minimum life of a stub.
  • Do not create stub
Specifies that a stub won’t be created for any archived message or item. When this option is selected, the archived messages/items will be removed from the computer and a stub recovery is not possible. To recover archived messages/items that do not have stubs, perform a Browse and Recovery procedure from the CommCell Console.
